Medvedev faces Vietnamese-origin tennis player, set to meet Djokovic in the final

(Dan Tri) - Daniil Medvedev will face Learner Tien in the fourth round of the Shanghai Masters 2025 today and if he overcomes this challenge, the Russian star can aim for the final match with Novak Djokovic.

In recent encounters, Daniil Medvedev has had to accept defeat against Learner Tien. In the semi-finals of the China Open 2025 held at the end of September, the young Vietnamese-American tennis player caused a stir when he continued to defeat Daniil Medvedev with a score of 5-7, 7-5, 4-0, before Medvedev withdrew due to injury.

Before that, Learner Tien also shocked when he defeated Medvedev at the Australian Open 2025 in January after a dramatic match that lasted nearly 5 hours. Learner Tien won the runner-up position at the China Open 2025 and only lost to Jannik Sinner in the final.

At the 2025 Shanghai Masters in China, Medvedev defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Dalibor Svrcina to advance to the fourth round. Notably, the Russian star has not lost a set and is showing good form.

Learner Tien had a more difficult journey, when he struggled to overcome Miomir Kecmanovic, Corentin Moutet, Cameron Norrie. However, the further he went into the tournament, the Vietnamese-American played better and better, and winning against Medvedev in the last two matches helped Learner Tien gain more confidence.

The match between Daniil Medvedev and Learner Tien will take place at 6:40 p.m. today (October 8). The winner will face either Alex de Minaur or Nuno Borges in the quarterfinals on October 9.

If things go well, Medvedev could face Novak Djokovic (who will meet Zizou Bergs in the quarterfinals on October 9) in the final of the 2025 Shanghai Masters. This is a completely possible scenario as Alcaraz is not participating in the tournament, and many stars such as Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz have been eliminated.
