According to GizChina , Micron has sent samples to phone and chipset manufacturers for testing. Currently, storage drives using UFS 4.0 will be available in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB capacities. The company will begin production of these storage drives in the second half of 2023, so it will be some time before people see phones using Micron's UFS 4.0 memory on shelves.
Micron's UFS 4.0 technology will make high-end smartphones more powerful.
Mark Montierth, corporate vice president and general manager of Micron's Mobile Business Unit, said: "Micron's latest mobile solution closely integrates the company's best-in-class UFS 4.0 technology, proprietary low-power controller, 232-layer NAND, and high-profile firmware architecture to deliver unprecedented performance. Combining all these technologies puts Micron at the forefront of delivering the performance and low-power consumption improvements our customers need to deliver exceptional user experiences with flagship smartphones."
The new UFS 4.0 storage standard will make mobile devices like smartphones even better. It offers several exciting improvements that make things faster and more efficient. First, when opening an app on a device with Micron's UFS 4.0 storage, the app will open 15% faster than before. Therefore, users won't have to wait as long to play their favorite games or use apps. Furthermore, devices with this storage will boot up 20% faster than with older standards. The new storage is also more energy efficient, which is really important for helping devices' batteries last longer. With UFS 4.0, devices can use up to 25% less energy.
Another interesting aspect of UFS 4.0 is its ability to write information to storage faster than before. Write bandwidth is 100% higher than the previous generation, while access bandwidth is 75% higher. This means everything will load faster, and users won't have to wait as long to load their images, videos , or games. Essentially, UFS 4.0 is a major improvement in storage technology, making devices faster, more efficient, and more powerful.
Micron's UFS 4.0 storage offers sequential read speeds of up to 4,300 MB/second and sequential write speeds of up to 4,000 MB/second. For comparison, that's faster than Samsung's UFS 4.0 standard, which offers sequential read speeds of 4,200 MB/second and sequential write speeds of 2,800 MB/second. Overall, Micron's standard write speeds are significantly faster than Samsung's.
