Microsoft ushers in a new era of PCs with Copilot+

The idea behind Copilot+ isn't some AI feature. Instead, the dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) on Copilot+ PCs will run a number of language models in the background of Windows 11 at all times. The models will scan everything a user does on their PC to provide relevant context. Microsoft calls this feature Recall and says it's like a "sensor for AI."

This means PCs with Copilot+ can retrieve a line from a multi-page document a user scanned a few days ago, monitor web browsing to make recommendations about frequently used websites and services… All of this has obvious privacy concerns, but Microsoft says Copilot+ will become an AI superpower when it's fully operational.

According to Microsoft, continuous monitoring is at the core of Copilot+ PC, but the powerful AI computing power can support more. We've seen a range of creative tools leverage AI, from Photoshop's generative AI image generator to Microsoft's own AI image generator, and Copilot+ PC will bring these capabilities to users' devices, saving them time and reducing the frequency of having to go to the cloud.

To achieve Copilot+ status, devices need to have at least 40 TOPS of AI processing power from the NPU - a huge leap from what we've seen before, when Intel's Meteor Lake only offered 10 TOPS from the NPU. Perhaps Microsoft's strict requirements explain why Intel is investing heavily in Lunar Lake, as well as AMD bolstering AMD's AI power.

The Copilot+ PC, however, doesn't use chips from AMD or Intel. The first batch of products will be exclusively powered by Snapdragon X Elite or Snapdragon X Plus chips - both of which boast 40 TOPS of AI processing power. Qualcomm says these chips offer four times the AI ​​power of competing chips, and enough power to run games like Baldur's Gate 3 at playable frame rates.

While Copilot+ looks powerful, it’s unclear exactly what it can do in practice. Hopefully, the new benchmarks for AI on PCs will go beyond the background blur we’ve seen over the past year.
