Heavy heart for poor students

With more than 20 years of experience in the profession, teacher Ho Thi Tuyet has always been affectionately called by her colleagues and students as the one who "passes the torch" to many generations of students in disadvantaged areas. She was awarded the title of Excellent Teacher in 2023, is a key teacher at the commune and provincial levels, and has been selected by the Department of Education and Training (DET) as a typical and advanced example for many consecutive years.

Not only is she an influential teacher in her field, Ms. Tuyet is also an active person in implementing educational innovation in the locality. She has successfully conducted 4 school, district and provincial level seminars on teaching, homeroom teaching, life skills and directed the Subject Council to complete 7 district and provincial level Literature seminars.

In addition, she also participates in many charity and relief activities, sharing difficulties with students and people in the countryside. Ms. Tuyet twice won the title of Provincial Emulation Fighter in 2020 and 2024.

Talking about her work journey, Ms. Tuyet shared many concerns. Local educational activities face many challenges when some schools have isolated locations, facilities are not synchronized, the teaching staff is locally surplus or shortage, many new job positions do not have staffing quotas, and even school health workers are not qualified to practice.

For Trieu Thuong Secondary School, the difficulties are compounded when the school in Tram village is 13 km from the center, bordering Ba Long mountain area. Ms. Tuyet shared that the way to class for teachers and students is always arduous. In the dry season, red dust covers clothes, in the rainy season it is muddy, sometimes even a small flood prevents students from going to school, the thick layer of mud after rain often interrupts teaching and learning. Most parents work in the fields, go to the forest or work for hire so they have little time to take care of their children; many children have to stay home to look after younger siblings, herd cows, or even leave their studies to teachers.

In addition, in reality, many students find it difficult to find suitable jobs after graduation, which significantly affects the current students' learning motivation and parents' trust in their educational path.

Within those limitations, Ms. Tuyet still persistently maintained the class, maintained the students, and instilled in the students the belief in learning. She recounted the case of Le Hoang Cuc – a poor student who was at risk of dropping out of school because of lack of warm clothes, lack of money for food, and had to herd cows and look after younger siblings.

Every day, Ms. Tuyet talked to her, encouraged her, used her salary to buy books and supported her with lunch. She also took Cuc to poorer rural areas so that she could understand that she had the right to rise up. Thanks to that companionship, Cuc not only overcame adversity but also won first prize in the provincial Literature competition, and later studied and worked in Japan.

"Cuc's story is the clearest proof that being a teacher, despite its hardships, is still the most proud journey," Ms. Tuyet emotionally shared.

Efforts to create sustainable changes for the homeland

To improve the quality of teaching, especially in Literature, Ms. Ho Thi Tuyet always believes that educational innovation requires the strong participation of the entire political system, in which management and administration must put quality at the center.

According to her, learners must be considered subjects, able to experience, explore, and digital transformation needs to be promoted but cannot replace the leading role of teachers.

In each Literature class, Ms. Tuyet always tries to bring literature from the pages of books to real life, so that each class does not stop at the pages of books but becomes a sincere dialogue between teachers and students. She helps students reflect on themselves in each character, each identity, thereby awakening kindness, sense of responsibility and compassion. When true emotions are evoked, it will be the door that opens for them to enter the world of literature with initiative, exploration and readiness to take on challenges.

“Teaching is not just about imparting knowledge, but also about lighting a fire and awakening a sense of discovery in each student,” Ms. Tuyet shared.

Always looking towards her hometown Trieu Phong, Ms. Tuyet hopes that students in disadvantaged areas will have a full, spacious learning environment and more opportunities. For local students, what Ms. Tuyet wishes is that they never reduce their dreams just because of where they were born, because "poor hometown cannot limit vision and aspirations".

“I hope that you are strong enough to go far, know how to keep your self-respect to live a decent life, have the aspiration to reach out but also enough to keep in your heart the love for your homeland - the place that gave you roots”, Ms. Tuyet shared and expressed her hope that the school will maintain solidarity, each teacher will have a little more enthusiasm, each parent will have a little more companionship and each student will have a little more effort to create sustainable changes for this land.

Referring to the new salary policy expected to be applied from January 1, 2026, Ms. Tuyet said that this is an important step, demonstrating the State's respect for the teaching profession.

According to Ms. Tuyet, this policy will help teachers feel secure in their commitment, attract talented people to the profession, increase motivation for innovation and dedication; at the same time, allowances based on regions and job characteristics will also become more practical.

“I really hope the decree will soon be stabilized, so that the salary and allowance policy can soon be put into practice and become meaningful, helping teachers feel secure in dedicating their best to the profession they have chosen,” Ms. Tuyet expressed.

On the occasion of the 43rd anniversary of Vietnam Teachers' Day, Ms. Ho Thi Tuyet (born in 1982), a teacher at Trieu Thuong Secondary School, was one of 60 outstanding teachers honored to meet Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh according to the plan of the Ministry of Education and Training in a series of activities to celebrate November 20 and the 8th Patriotic Emulation Congress of the Education sector.
