The exhibition introduces to the public in Vietnam for the first time the works of Japanese female artist Chiharu Shiota, one of the world's leading names in conceptual art.
The exhibition "Emotional Tide" takes place at VCCA from October 4, 2023 to March 30, 2024.
Chiharu Shiota is considered one of the most influential Asian female visionaries in the world of contemporary art. Over decades of adventures in the art world, Shiota has continuously experimented and challenged herself in every creative field, from the ephemeral dance of performance art to the silent dreaminess of the language of painting, from the tangible whispers of sculptures to the all-sensory immersion of the language of installation art.
Chiharu Shiota's works are a convergence of beauty in both form and content, both visually impressive and containing countless layers of profound meaning.
The exhibition “A Tide of Emotions” includes works made specifically for the VCCA space, as a response to the unique and poetic architecture here. The main work of the same name covers the large space with a network of red threads – a material typical of Chiharu Shiota’s artistic practice – connected to old boats full of history and stories, containing countless metaphors about Vietnam, where the coastline stretches as far as the eye can see.
With her skillful hands, Chiharu Shiota weaves the threads of life, transforming ordinary materials into something magnificent. Hundreds of thousands of threads weave paths between the past and the present, evoking the calligraphy art of an ancient and traditional world with thousands of looms.
In his inner world, Chiharu Shiota is like an alchemist who forges works that speak of the gentle touch of memory, of the sanctity of his homeland, of silent and profound migrations, of the dance between life and death. In the crimson palette, Chiharu Shiota finds the echo of his soul mingling in a dance of joy, a celebration of the warmth of life.
The exhibition “Emotional Tide” is the first exhibition event of artist Chiharu Shiota in Vietnam. With a universal message and profound humanistic meaning, this will be an important and meaningful art event for the public, opening up new multi-dimensional perspectives on the world and life.
The exhibition will be open from October 4, 2023 to March 30, 2024 at Vincom Center for Contemporary Art (VCCA), B1 – R3, Vincom Mega Mall Royal City (72A Nguyen Trai, Thanh Xuan, Hanoi). Within the framework of the exhibition, VCCA will organize various art education events to help audiences better understand the works and practices of artist Chiharu Shiota.
Program details will be updated regularly on VCCA's official fanpage here.
