With more than 10 years of experience in raising egg-laying chickens, Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuc, Kim Phu 11 residential group, My Lam ward, Tuyen Quang province, has accumulated extensive experience in cleaning barns, care processes and disease prevention.

Realizing the increasing market demand, in early 2023 she decided to open a new direction, building a system of iron mesh cages, ventilation fans, modern incubators... to raise French pigeons, a bird breed with high productivity and delicious meat quality.

She meticulously purchased thousands of French pigeons from reputable establishments in the northern provinces to raise flocks. From there, the model quickly developed, stabilizing each batch and each row of cages.

According to Ms. Phuc, raising French pigeons is not too difficult but also requires breeders to proactively prevent diseases. Common diseases such as Newcastle, pox with symptoms of bumps on the eyelids, beak, legs or intestinal fungal diseases... If not vaccinated and cages are not cleaned regularly, damage can occur very quickly.

Therefore, right from the first batch, she strictly implemented biosecurity procedures including full vaccination, regular disinfection of barns, and control of food sources. Corn, wheat, etc. are all carefully selected by the farm from suppliers with clear origins. Ms. Phuc said that keeping the French pigeons healthy is keeping her own livelihood. Only when the market trusts her will the model stand firm in the long run.

After 8 months of raising, the farm successfully produced the first batch of commercial pigeons of more than 1,000. She continued to select healthy individuals that were well-bred to breed the flock. Thanks to following the correct process, the farm's total flock of French pigeons has now reached about 5,000.

Ms. Phuc said that a brood of birds takes about 8 months from breeding to selling, including 5 months for the birds to reproduce, then from the incubation stage to commercial farming takes another 3 months.

Currently, Phuc Chien farm supplies the market with over 2,000 commercial French pigeons each month. The birds have fragrant, firm meat, and customers who eat them once will order long-term. Therefore, restaurants, organic food stores, and retailers all make reservations in advance. Many days, her farm does not have enough birds to sell.

Not only the husband and wife work, the farm also regularly hires 3 local workers. One person is responsible for keeping a diary of the farming, from selecting the embryonated eggs for hatching, recording the age of the birds until the time of sale, ensuring accurate management according to biosecurity standards.

In addition to French pigeons, Ms. Chien's farm also raises 3,500 egg-laying chickens and uses leftover food from raising birds to raise about 500 more commercial chickens, increasing economic efficiency. On average, each month, the farm exports about 60,000 chicken eggs to the market; each year, it sells about 800 commercial chickens.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Quan, Deputy Head of the Economic, Infrastructure and Urban Affairs Department of My Lam Ward, said that Phuc Chien farm is a typical biosafety livestock model of the ward. It not only provides a large amount of safe food to the market but also creates jobs for local workers. Biosafety livestock models are an inevitable trend that the ward's livestock industry encourages farmers to develop and replicate.

The success of Phuc Chien farm shows that when farmers boldly change their thinking, apply biosafety procedures and invest properly in breeds and barns, livestock farming can completely create sustainable economic value. The French pigeon farming model not only opens up a way to enrich Ms. Phuc's family but also suggests the potential for replication locally, especially in the context of increasing demand for clean food.
