Bolero explosion
18 years to make 10 albums in the project "Nocturne for Lovers" is a very long time, what idea made you do such a long-term project?
Singer Dam Vinh Hung.
The old music genre, bolero in 2005-2006 was fading away, there was no way to survive. I "smelled" the scent of the market and always took the lead in the trend. In 2002, Mr. Dam's name just exploded, when I became a star for only 2-3 years, I had to choose and prepare a different path for myself.
The old music treasure was so large, I started to work on a proper music project. I chose the name "Nocturne for Lovers", because at that time it was very difficult to choose a name, "Eternal Love Song" at that time was already sung by Khanh Ha.
That album was the first to release two CDs at the same time, one in a "classy" style and the other in a "cheesy" style. The next resounding success was "Qua con me" and "Cho dong". That was when there were signs of turmoil and the return of bolero music. At that time, it must be said that the project was a terrible "win".
At that time, the CDs were sold in a terrifying number, so I had to keep printing them to sell. Not to mention that pirated CDs were rampant at that time, but my CDs were still selling out continuously. I created a huge buzz because I was the only one in the "market", no one else was releasing them. After that, because it was so successful, a series of new singers followed suit.
But not everyone has enough fate and strength to follow old music like you?
Singing old songs requires a certain knowledge, or a period of living with it, being immersed in that culture. So all the things of the old days never escape my eyes, from the scent of shampoo and hair-curling soap, the skirt, the waist of the ao dai...
Bolero has songs that only men can sing and vice versa, there are songs that only women can sing. For example, "Winter Night Sadness" can only be sung by women, and "Sad City" can only be sung by men. Later, when old music became so successful, the music market began to attract game shows such as "Bolero Saigon", "Bolero Idol", "Bolero Duet"... which exploded everywhere and everyone.
So from then on, I was given the title "1 of the 2 people who brought bolero back to life". 100% alive, alive and exploding everywhere (laughs).
But looking back, I was the pioneer at that time, then Cam Ly. Cam Ly did very well at that time, because Cam Ly's husband loved bolero, so Cam Ly also loved this music genre. However, Cam Ly did not do projects. As for me, I did everything thoroughly.

Want to make a difference
Not only did he see the market, he also knew how to take advantage of the success of bolero, creating derivative products, following his old music albums?
I do art with careful calculation and preparation, from albums to live shows or performances, the concept and theme are very clear, so I quickly succeed. The important thing is that I still have to be loyal to the young music audience, I have to go staggered to accompany those products.
Because of the balance between young music and old music, I have not lost market share. I release young music albums seasonally and according to the times, not according to projects like old music.
There are songs that I never thought I would meet the author again. But after the album was released, when I performed, someone ran up to hug me.
Uncle Pham Manh Cuong is the author of "Thuong hoai ngan nam", he said "Thank you for making my song come back to life". Oh my god, I got goosebumps saying: "I'm the one thanking you!".

If in 2005-2006 overseas singers had not yet flocked to Vietnam, it would be understandable that you won big. However, after 18 years, why did you stop at album number 10?
As for bolero, I have complete faith in them. Their loyal audience is still there, and in the future there will be a new generation. It will continue like that, I only know that they haven't had time to love anything else so they are still waiting for me.
Even my young music audience, because they love me, they listen and are loyal to bolero, but in essence they are not fans of this music genre. Another reason is that I sing bolero but in a unique way, I do not sing in a slow, drawn-out, depressing way, it is sad but it will have to stop at a certain level, to bring out its pure soul, not always suffering is good.
There were even times when I thought I wanted to play bolero in many different ways. If I'm not mistaken, it was 2010, I told Duc Tri that I wanted to use the harmony from before 1975, could I now strip out all the voices of those people?
I want that sound, it's the true essence of the old days, that's how it's fun to listen to. I don't mind paying royalties to foreign companies, I love it that much. But back then, the machines weren't modern so Tri couldn't do it, now that I can do it, I'll stop at 10.
But why not 11, 12?
I will do another project, there will never be a number 11 or 12. All the projects I do only reach number 10 and then stop. Because I believe that numbers like 11 and 12 are just borrowed numbers from previous numbers, so I don't like them.

Invest wisely, get 2, 3 times profit
For this album number 10 "For lost love", why did you invite Truc Nhan, Trung Quan, and Uyen Linh to sing?
For a long time, I have been singing in my old bolero style. But in the past 2 or 3 years, I have seen that the music market has changed. I used to stay up many nights alone listening to hot trending songs, topping the charts. I wondered why such bland products were hot?
Album number 10 "For lost love" by Dam Vinh Hung.
I think I have to do something "heartbreaking" now, try it out before making a final decision. If I sing a song that is too young, I won't be able to compete with the young people, and if it's too old, no one will listen.
I sang in a lofi style and the audience liked it so much that I decided: "I have to change my singing style. Old-fashioned Bolero but with a new look". Then the old audience would have something new to listen to. I have to play the strangest things that no one can imagine to be good.
I convinced Uyen Linh and Truc Nhan first. I had to make two separate remixes, one cheesy and one elegant to convince Truc Nhan and Uyen Linh. Street bolero was Uyen Linh's, lofi was Truc Nhan's. I calculated each person individually, it had to be very emotional, very flying.
Making 10 albums cost you 5 apartments. Up to now, which songs in your 10 albums have earned you the most money?
The most popular and profitable songs are "Love Castle", "Nocturne for Lovers", "Sad City", "Lonely Love"... I perform these songs every night in tea rooms. It took me 8 years just to get a license to sing "Sad City", "Lonely Love". But anything related to the name Dam Vinh Hung is never a waste of money. I invest properly and get 2-3 times more profit.
Thank you!
