The Kremlin said on January 17 that it does not expect the United States to ease its stance on sanctions on Russian oil when President-elect Donald Trump takes office, although his administration is open to dialogue on the Ukraine conflict.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the comment after Scott Bessent, the Treasury Secretary nominee for President-elect Donald Trump's new administration, said he would "100% support" increasing sanctions on Russian oil producers if Trump requested them.

Mr. Peskov emphasized that Russia cannot expect the US to fundamentally change its stance on sanctions.

Given the current situation, the Kremlin continues to closely monitor moves from the US and maintains a tough stance on this issue.

Earlier, in his final days in the White House, the administration of US President Joe Biden took decisive action against Russian oil - announcing the most severe sanctions against Moscow's oil industry, blacklisting nearly 200 ships of the "dark fleet" and targeting Russia's leading oil producers, Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegas.

According to Kpler data, sanctioned tankers account for about 42% of Russia's seaborne oil exports, mainly to China and India.

The latest round of US sanctions on Russian oil announced on January 10 could significantly disrupt Russia's oil supply and distribution chains, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said.

President-elect Trump's nominee for secretary of state, Senator Marco Rubio, said on January 15 that lifting sanctions on Russia could be used as leverage in potential peace talks in Ukraine.

* On the same day, January 17, in a move to retaliate against the sanctions, the Russian Ministry of Justice announced that it had added the US Congressional Committee on Security and Cooperation in Europe (Helsinki Commission), the US Help Heroes of Ukraine Fund, and the International Religious Freedom Alliance of America (IRFBA) to the list of foreign and international non-governmental organizations whose activities are considered undesirable on Russian territory.

In December 2024, the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation recognized the activities of these organizations as undesirable on the territory of the Russian Federation.

* Speaking on national radio regarding the issue of sanctions against Russia, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that it is time to lift the European Union (EU) sanctions against Russia. According to him, the EU will have to adapt to a new era when Donald Trump returns to the White House and needs to build a relationship with Moscow "without sanctions".
