According to the Daily Mail , the six upper dentures were designed to preserve the British Prime Minister 's natural lisp during World War II.
Churchill used his gold-set dentures when he delivered the words "We shall meet them on the beaches", as he called on the nation to fight the Nazis.
Dentures were very important to the late Prime Minister Churchill and he always carried two sets with him. The ones that have just been sold were made at the beginning of World War II when Churchill was 65 years old.
The dentures sold for £18,000, more than double their suggested price of £8,000, Cotswold Auctions said.
“This is certainly one of the most special items we have ever sold,” said Cotswold Auctions director Liz Poole in a statement.
Designed by Churchill's personal dentist Wilfred Fish and crafted by technician Derek Cudlipp, the set was first put up for sale by Cudlipp's son Nigel in 2010, when it sold for £15,200.
Winston Churchill, one of the most talented and important leaders in British history and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during World War II, suffered from dental problems throughout his life and lost several teeth during his 20s. According to the Guardian , it is reported that the late British Prime Minister had up to four sets of dentures.
Meanwhile, according to CNN , one of Churchill's dentures was buried with him when he died. Another set is now on display in the Hunterian Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons in London.
According to the Hunterian Museum, “a well-fitting denture was an important physical and psychological support.” It allowed Churchill to speak effectively – important for any politician – and especially so for someone for whom oratory skills were so important to his success.
Also at the auction, the microphone used by Churchill to announce the end of World War II sold for £11,500.
From this year, Churchill's image has appeared on the £2 coin to mark the 150th anniversary of his birth.
