NHK television reported on January 12 that cybersecurity company Trend Micro has just released a report identifying that up to 46 businesses and organizations in Japan were targeted by distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks between December 27 and January 9.
According to Trend Micro's analysis, the attacks were carried out through a botnet network - a remotely controlled computer system that sends large amounts of data to crash target websites or servers.
Among the victims were many big Japanese names such as Japan Airlines, MUFG Bank and telecommunications carrier NTT Docomo. The attacks caused serious problems, causing the systems of these businesses to malfunction and users unable to access their websites.
Trend Micro expert Katsuyuki Okamoto commented that although it is difficult to determine the exact purpose of these attacks, it is possible that this is just a probing step, preparing for a larger-scale attack in the future.
