Trang Bang Town Farmers' Association visited the bamboo rat farming model of Mr. Le Van Loc.
Mr. Phan Thien Kham - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Phuoc Binh Commune (Trang Bang Town) said that a farmer in the commune is very successful with the model of raising bamboo rats. That is the household of Mr. Le Van Loc, residing in Go Ngai Hamlet.
Mr. Loc shared: “In 2008, my wife and I opened a family restaurant, and the income was enough to cover our living expenses. Business was up and down and we also had to take care of our two children's education. In 2020, I happened to see models of raising bamboo rats online, so I asked around and sought out successful bamboo rat breeders in and outside the province to learn from their experiences. Seeing that raising bamboo rats was easy and economically efficient, I decided to buy 5 pairs of bamboo rats to try raising them in the hope of having more conditions to take care of my family's life."
With his industrious and studious nature, Mr. Loc successfully raised the first 5 pairs of bamboo rats and accumulated experience. Thanks to the Hamlet Farmers' Association's introduction of a loan of 50 million VND from the Social Policy Bank's job creation fund, he decided to buy 50 more bamboo rats, along with investing in cages and purchasing necessary items to raise bamboo rats.
Up to now, he has developed 100 cages, each cage is only 0.5m2, raising 1-3 bamboo rats. Each month, he sells from 20 to 25 pairs of bamboo rats to people who want to raise them in Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai, Ca Mau and some northern provinces. Bamboo rats that are more than 2.5 months old, weighing from 300 to over 400g/rat, he sells from 1.6 million VND to 2.5 million VND/pair.
Mr. Loc said that bamboo rats are omnivorous so food is easy to find, mainly vegetables and fruits or plants such as sugarcane, corn, even bamboo. Bamboo rats eat little and care is simple so the cost is low, after each sale he makes a profit of more than 30 million VND.
