"Red Rain," a war film directed by Meritorious Artist Dang Thai Huyen, has officially surpassed Tran Thanh's "Mai" to become the highest-grossing Vietnamese film in history.
According to statistics from Box Office Vietnam, "Red Rain" reached 551.4 billion VND at 4:30 p.m. on September 7.
As of the morning of September 8, the film's revenue had reached over 562 billion VND. This is the work with the fastest revenue growth rate in the history of Vietnamese cinema, taking only 17 days to climb to the number 1 position at the box office.
Not only was it a commercial success, "Red Rain" also created a cultural phenomenon by arousing national pride, especially among young people.
Set in the 81-day and night campaign to protect Quang Tri Citadel in 1972, the film touches viewers' emotions with a humane story, realistic images and familiar characters.
Although exploiting the war theme is considered difficult to approach, "Red Rain" proves the opposite: If invested seriously and made with passion, political-historical films can absolutely explode in both revenue and social impact. Many audiences even return to the theater to watch the film, a rare thing for war films.
This is a historic milestone for Vietnamese cinema, not only because of the revenue but also because of the strong message: Vietnamese cinema can completely conquer audiences with the nation's history.
"Red Rain," the first film by a female director to hold the box office title, was an artistic and commercial hit, and an important push for the film industry to step out of its comfort zone, no longer depending on comedies, romances or remakes.
Most importantly, "Red Rain" has inspired patriotism, cherished peace and connected today's generation with the glorious history of our ancestors.
Officially released on August 22, "Red Rain" continues to attract a large number of moviegoers. With this momentum, "Red Rain" is likely to earn 600-700 billion VND and could become Vietnam's first trillion-dollar blockbuster as predicted by experts./.
