The peak heat wave at the end of April made Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong's family (Dinh Son commune, Anh Son) have to work very hard and spend a lot of money to water 2 hectares of Xa Doai oranges.

Ms. Huong said: “The oranges are in the fruit-bearing period, so providing enough water is very important, determining the quality and yield when harvesting. The heat is at its peak, even though we tried our best to water the oranges, it was still ineffective. It took a lot of effort, electricity, and water, but it was only enough to keep the oranges alive. The rain on the evening of May 1 was truly a “golden rain”, after the rain, the orange trees “refreshed” and became green again.”

On the afternoon of May 1, heavy rain also occurred in Con Cuong district from 4:20 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. After a series of severe drought days, this rain was very valuable to farmers as the crop areas from tea, oranges, flowers, rice to bamboo, etc. were all irrigated, escaping drought. However, due to heavy rain, some areas of rice in the ripening stage were knocked down.

Ms. Lo Thi Tam, an expert from the Con Cuong District Department of Agriculture, said: “It rained heavily, but fortunately there was no tornado or hail, so the damage caused by the rain was not much, only a small area of rice fell down, and a few landslides. In return, the rain watered many areas of crops to avoid being burned to death due to drought.”

In Dien Chau, some localities also started to have scattered rain. The amount of rain was not much, not long lasting but enough to cool the air again. And especially, with the rain, many peanut areas of people in Dien Thinh, Dien Thanh, Dien Hung, Dien Ky communes... which were in the harvest period were moistened, the soil was softer and easier to pull.

On the morning of May 2, taking advantage of the cool weather and moist soil, local people went to the fields to pick peanuts. "Thanks to the rain, the soil is less dry and hard, making it easier to pick peanuts, and saving money on water to moisten the fields before harvesting," said Ms. Thu, a farmer in Minh Duc hamlet (Dien Thinh commune).

In Thanh Chuong, there were showers and thunderstorms in some areas on the evening of May 1 and the morning of May 2. Although the rain was not heavy or prolonged, it contributed to drought prevention for crops, especially rice and vegetable areas.

“In Thanh Tien, there is basically enough water for irrigation, not yet drought. However, due to the prolonged heat, irrigation is not optimal for crops. With rain and cool air, crops such as vegetables, squash, etc. recover very quickly. Especially the area of squash for fiber and squash is in the flowering and fruiting stage,” said Mr. Duong Dac Thang, Chairman of the Farmers’ Association of Thanh Tien commune.

According to the North Central Hydrometeorological Station, in the next few days, the province will continue to have scattered showers and thunderstorms. The rain, which comes at the peak of the dry season, has helped nearly 50,000 hectares of local fruit trees, such as grapefruit, oranges, guavas, etc., enter the fruit-bearing period - an important time for plants to accumulate nutrients that determine crop yields. Other crops such as vegetables and rice also need water to escape the drought.

In addition to helping fruit trees and crops to be watered, the "golden rain" also helped over 1 million hectares of forest in the province to quench their "thirst". The rain increased humidity, cooled down, and reduced the forest fire warning level in localities in the province.

At the same time, supplement water sources for rivers and streams, provide irrigation water for fields, and restore agricultural areas at risk of drought.

According to the weather forecast and warning bulletin of the North Central Region Hydrometeorological Station from May 2-10, 2024:

In Nghe An , on May 2, the continental high pressure weakened after weakening, compressing and gradually filling the low pressure trough with an axis passing through the North Central region, combined with the wind convergence zone above 1500m; On May 3-11, a low trough formed connecting to the low pressure area in the West with an axis at about 24-27 degrees North latitude, around the evening of May 4, May 5 this low pressure trough was compressed and pushed down to the South, gradually filling up by the weak strengthening part in the North. Above, the subtropical high pressure tended to slowly recede to the East; the wind convergence zone above 1500m remained over the North.

Thunderstorms accompanied by tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind can affect human life, agricultural production, break trees, damage houses, traffic works and infrastructure.
