The Trump administration is considering a $1,000 fee for tourists and other nonimmigrant visa applicants seeking expedited interviews, according to a U.S. official and an internal State Department memo.
Reuters revealed the plan to charge visa fees in a report on June 4, the first time the public has heard about it.
Individuals entering the United States on tourist and other nonimmigrant visas must pay a processing fee of $185. However, under the new considerations, applicants will have a new “premium service” option that allows them to schedule their visa interviews in advance.
Because it is positioned as a premium service, the amount that a person will spend will be up to $ 1,000, according to Reuters. The program could be deployed in a pilot form as early as next December.
According to observers, the application of premium service fees for visas shows that the idea of selling US citizenship that Mr. Trump once mentioned is gradually being realized.
However, the State Department 's legal team said there was a "high risk" that the White House budget office or the courts would strike it down. The department's memo also said setting fees above the general cost of providing the service "is contrary to precedents expressed by the Supreme Court."
A State Department spokesman declined to comment on internal documents and communications.
"We are flexible in scheduling nonimmigrant visa appointments and are continually working to improve our operations around the world," the State Department representative added.
Since taking office on January 20, Mr. Trump has cracked down on immigration, including revoking some student visas and increasing scrutiny of all visa applicants to enter the United States.
According to its most recent annual report, the US State Department issued 10.4 million nonimmigrant visas in fiscal year 2023, including 5.9 million tourist visas.
The World Travel and Tourism Council estimates that international tourist spending in the US is expected to decline by about 7% by 2025, as opposition to President Trump's policies and a strong US dollar drive foreign visitors to other destinations.
