According to Bloomberg , the US Treasury Department is expected to announce 15 individual sanctions against officials linked to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who are alleged to have obstructed the holding of a free and fair presidential election.
The sanctions list includes members of Venezuela's electoral body, courts, Congress, intelligence, and military police.
In addition, Washington plans to impose separate sanctions on certain individuals responsible for the financial irregularities. The announcement of these new sanctions could be as early as this week.
In the Venezuelan presidential election held on July 28, the National Electoral Council declared Nicolas Maduro the president-elect for the 2025-2031 term.
Subsequently, a series of protests erupted in Venezuela, with clashes occurring between police and demonstrators. According to the country's Attorney General's Office, more than 2,000 people were arrested for vandalism of state infrastructure, incitement to hatred, and terrorism, following the declaration of victory by President Nicolas Maduro.
According to an update on August 31, the Venezuelan Prison Watch organization – a human rights group – said that more than 700 people arrested in protests following Venezuela's controversial presidential election have been transferred to maximum-security prisons.
Meanwhile, the Venezuelan government accuses several countries of interfering in the elections and the people's right to self-determination.
* Also on September 2nd (local time), a court in Venezuela issued an arrest warrant for opposition presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who claimed to have won the election held at the end of July legitimately.
On Instagram , the Venezuelan Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed that the court had approved its request for an arrest warrant for Gonzalez on charges of "serious crimes."
On September 2nd, the Venezuelan Attorney General's Office announced that a court in the country had issued an arrest warrant for opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia on multiple charges.
Attorney General Tarek Saab shared a photo of the arrest warrant with the press via a message on the Telegram app. The arrest warrant was issued at the request of prosecutor Luis Ernesto Duenez, accusing González of conspiring to usurp power, falsifying public documents, inciting anti-law activities, and conspiring against the Venezuelan state.
Previously, González failed to comply with three summonses to testify in the case of the opposition website publishing incorrect results in the Venezuelan presidential election.
In addition to González, Attorney General Saab also opened a criminal investigation into opposition leader Maria Corina Machado and the opposition's vote-counting website, and arrested several individuals involved for inciting protests following the recent presidential election.
