The US wants to sell the FBI building and headquarters of a series of top ministries.

The Trump administration said it is considering selling several properties including the headquarters of the Justice Department , the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and a building that used to be Mr. Trump's luxury hotel.

The US General Services Administration (GSA) said on March 4 that it had identified about 443 properties with a total area of nearly 7.5 million square meters that were "not core government operations" and could be sold.

According to Reuters on March 5, this potential sell-off is part of US President Donald Trump's efforts to cut the size of the federal government. This downsizing campaign puts 100,000 workers at risk of being laid off.

The Elon Musk-led Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE) claims it has saved $105 billion so far, in part by canceling government leases. But many budget experts question the reliability of DOGE’s data.

In a statement, GSA said it “no longer expects” to secure funding to upgrade the properties, noting that the sale could potentially save more than $430 million in annual operating costs. The sale of the properties would ensure that taxpayer dollars are not wasted on vacant federal space and that the proceeds can be reinvested in high-quality work environments, according to GSA.

Some of the buildings on the GSA list include the old post office — formerly the Trump International Hotel — and the former FBI J. Edgar Hoover Building. The list also includes the headquarters of several major government agencies, including the Veterans Administration, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Energy, the Department of Labor, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Federal Aviation Administration. The GSA headquarters is also on the list.

The Internal Revenue Service said in an internal memo last week that it would begin selling the buildings in June, after the April tax filing season ends. Several agencies whose offices are likely to be sold did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
