The reason Mr. Trump gave for the decision was the issue of " human rights " in South Africa. In a post on X, he alleged that Afrikaners (descendants of Dutch settlers, as well as French and German immigrants) in South Africa were facing persecution, an allegation the South African government denied.
"No United States Government officials will attend as long as these human rights abuses continue. I look forward to hosting the 2026 G20 Summit in Miami, Florida!" Mr. Trump said.

Last month, the US president set a record low ceiling on the number of refugees admitted to the United States and said those admitted would be largely white Afrikaner.
Mr Trump has criticised South Africa's domestic and foreign policies - from its land policy to its accusations of genocide by Israel in its war in Gaza.
Earlier this year, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also skipped the G20 foreign ministers' meeting in South Africa, which holds the G20 presidency from December 2024 to November 2025. The US will take over the G20 presidency from South Africa after this meeting.
The G20 2025 Summit will be the 20th meeting of the Group of 20, a gathering of heads of state and government scheduled for November 22-23. It will be the first G20 summit to be held in South Africa and on the African continent.
In addition to the political issue with South Africa itself, the US decision to withdraw from this year's G20 summit also reflects the Trump administration's tough and even extreme diplomatic approach.
Recently, Mr. Trump also announced that he will not send high-ranking officials to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP30, which will open on November 10 in Brazil, a country that has recently had tensions with the US government.
