The vote, which took place on November 6 in Austin, Texas, received more than 75% support, sending Tesla shares up more than 3% in after-hours trading.
Stepping onto the stage amid pulsating music and dancing robots, Musk declared: “What we are about to begin is not just a new chapter for Tesla, but a whole new book. It’s going to be a very interesting story.”
“Other shareholder meetings are like slumber parties, but ours is really lively. It's great,” he joked.
Shareholders also re-elected three board directors and approved a replacement compensation plan after an earlier package was delayed by a legal challenge in Delaware. Tesla’s move to Texas allowed Musk to regain full voting rights over his roughly 15% stake.
Despite objections from some major investors – including Norway's sovereign wealth fund – Tesla's board warned that Musk could leave the company if the bonus package was not approved.
Analysts viewed the vote as a positive sign, reinforcing the belief that Musk remains central to Tesla's future, despite his recent far-right political rhetoric that has tarnished the brand's image.
The massive package is designed on a “reward for performance” principle: Musk will only receive all of his shares if Tesla hits a series of new milestones—including producing 20 million cars, putting 1 million robotaxis into service, selling 1 million humanoid robots, and hitting $400 billion in core profits. To trigger the full package, Tesla’s market capitalization would have to increase from its current $1.5 trillion to $8.5 trillion over the next decade.
If all goals are met, Elon Musk could own nearly $1 trillion worth of shares, though he will have to repay some of them to Tesla as part of the deal. At that point, Musk – who is currently worth about $475 billion – will officially reach a level of wealth beyond human imagination.
A trillion dollars is so unimaginable that it’s almost absurd. If you spend $40 every second, it would take you more than 792 years to spend it all. With that kind of money, Musk could buy the entire American auto industry, take over the Ivy League five times, or even… buy Switzerland. And while it sounds like science fiction, the path to becoming the world’s first trillionaire is no longer so far away for Elon Musk.
