• Effectiveness of shrimp farming combined with tilapia release to treat water sources
  • Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Van Su surveyed the tilapia farming model in Can Tho City.

The workshop was organized by the Ca Mau Agricultural Extension Center in coordination with the People's Committee of Bac Lieu Ward and attracted about 50 households, businesses, cooperatives and cooperative groups in the area to attend.

Mr. Cao Tuan Anh, Director of Can Tho Seafood Joint Stock Company, shares the effectiveness and techniques of raising tilapia with farmers.

Currently, the area of tilapia farming combined with other aquatic species in Ca Mau province is about 371,840 hectares, the average yield is about 50 kg of tilapia/ha/year, the commercial fish output is estimated at about 20,000 tons/year. Because it is raised in combination with shrimp, tilapia is less affected by diseases and environmental fluctuations. In recent times, Ca Mau tilapia products have mainly served the domestic market, consumed through traditional markets in many forms such as: fresh tilapia, tilapia for aquaculture bait, dried, fish sauce, tilapia cakes and other traditional processed products.

Representatives of tilapia farmers exchanged practical experiences at the workshop.

At the workshop, delegates focused on discussing and clarifying the potential and advantages of the tilapia farming model, while pointing out the difficulties, challenges and solutions to improve farming efficiency, aiming at export. The workshop also recorded many opinions and wishes of the people, especially about product output , feed costs, water sources for farming ponds... On that basis, the functional sectors shared a lot of useful information, oriented technical support, production - consumption connection, creating conditions for sustainable model development in the coming time.

Delegates visited the tilapia farming model in Bac Lieu Ward.

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Tiet Tien Dung, Director of Ca Mau Agricultural Extension Center, said: "Ca Mau has a lot of potential to develop tilapia farming model, however, the key issue is to ensure economic efficiency, avoid the situation of good harvest but low price, no stable output".

Mr. Tiet Tien Dung, Director of Ca Mau Agricultural Extension Center, spoke at the workshop.

Mr. Dung emphasized that the workshop is an opportunity to record and share practical experiences of farming households and businesses, aiming at export markets, reducing production costs, and increasing profits. To achieve that, farmers need to follow the planning, comply with technical processes, ensure quality breeds and feed, combine natural feed sources and produce according to orders, and avoid rampant farming leading to oversupply.

The workshop contributed to helping farmers have a more comprehensive view of the aquaculture situation of the province in general and the tilapia farming model in particular, thereby orienting correctly, applying effective technical solutions, proactively connecting safe output, promoting the development of intensive tilapia farming model in the coming time.
