Reasonable operation of hydroelectric reservoirs, minimizing impacts on downstream areas

Buon Kuop Hydropower Company said that the unit has plans and strategies to operate and regulate the Buon Tua Srah, Buon Kuop and Serepok 3 reservoirs to respond to storm No. 13.

It is forecasted that the Buon Tua Srah lake basin will have rain from 40 - 80 mm/24h, in some places more than 100 mm/24h; the basins of Buon Kuop and Serepok 3 lakes will have rain from 800 - 150 mm/24h, in some places more than 180 mm/24h. According to calculations, the flow to Buon Tua Srah lake is likely to reach from 450 - 550 m3/s, Buon Kuop lake will reach from 450 - 650 m3/s, Serepok 3 lake will reach from 650 - 850 m3/s.

At 10:00 a.m. on November 6, Buôn Tua Srah Lake had a water level of 486.99 m, water flow into the lake of 178 m3/s; Buôn Kuốp Lake had a water level of 411.1 m, water flow into the lake of 463 m3/s; Srêpok 3 Lake had a water level of 271.5 m, water flow into the lake of 636 m3/s.

Based on the current hydrological situation and forecast of rain and flood in the coming days, the company will operate the project to proactively respond to storm No. 13 and the requirements in the inter-reservoir operation process and reservoir operation of the authorities.

Specifically, Buon Tua Srah reservoir continues to maintain the lake water level at the lowest flood level, regulating the spillway discharge at a reasonable flow rate, depending on the actual situation to minimize the impact on downstream areas.

Buon Kuop Hydropower Reservoir maintains the water level of the reservoir not exceeding the normal rising water level; regulates the total discharge flow downstream (including the machine flow and overflow flow) to be balanced with the flow to the reservoir.

For Serepok 3 reservoir, continue to monitor the flow changes to the reservoir to gradually lower the water level, in order to create the largest possible flood prevention capacity to cut off floodwaters downstream when floods come to the reservoir within the next 24 hours. During the regulation process, ensure a reasonable total discharge flow, depending on the actual situation to minimize the impact on downstream areas.

In order to ensure safety for the project and downstream areas, comply with the inter-reservoir operation process and reservoir operation process, Buon Kuop Hydropower Company recommends that functional agencies and local authorities direct and disseminate to people in the downstream areas of reservoirs about the expected regulation of reservoirs to respond to storm No. 13 as above so that they know and proactively prevent it.
