Improve crop productivity with organic fish protein

Việt NamViệt Nam09/08/2024

Mr. Phan Van Chao's family (village 2, Nghia Hoa commune) has 6 hectares of coffee intercropped with fruit trees such as durian, avocado, rambutan... Previously, Mr. Chao often used inorganic fertilizers to fertilize crops, so the investment cost was high. In 2022, after learning about the application of biotechnology to compost fish protein into microbial fertilizer, his family gradually switched to using this type of organic fertilizer.

Mr. Chao said: “As someone who has a passion for coffee, I always research and learn the most advanced production methods to apply, especially organic farming methods. Since using fish protein that my family composts, the garden has always been green and productive. With 6 hectares of various crops, I earn over 1 billion VND/year.”

Initially, Mr. Chao learned how to ferment fish protein through seminars, trainings and learning more on mass media. After several times of fermenting incorrectly, he gained experience in fermenting the best quality fish protein. He bought some large plastic barrels to produce his own microbial fish fertilizer; bought fresh fish waste from the market and soaked it in a mixture of humic acid, eggs, bananas, etc.

According to Mr. Chao, humic is a part of organic matter in the soil, does not directly provide nutrients but contributes to improving the soil, helping plants absorb nutrients and water more effectively. A month later, he mixed fish protein with water in a balanced dose to fertilize the plants.

“Fish contains a lot of protein, combined with probiotics, it will help plants absorb it better. Besides, it also helps the soil become fertile and loose,” said Mr. Chao.

Mr. Dang Thanh Van's family (Group 1, Phu Hoa town) also uses self-fermented fish fertilizer for their farm of more than 3 hectares growing coffee, guava, longan, coconut, etc. Since learning how to ferment fish fertilizer, Mr. Van has saved significantly on fertilizer investment costs. Not only that, compared to other types of fertilizer, plants fertilized with fish fertilizer become more lush and less susceptible to pests and diseases.

Mr. Nguyen Cong Hoang Gia - Director of Anh Duong Tay Nguyen Company Limited: The method of fermenting fish protein with microbial products is increasingly widely applied in agricultural cultivation. Currently, there are many simple and highly effective ways of fermenting fish protein that farmers can apply such as: fermenting fish manure with emgro (original EM); fermenting fish manure with emzeo fermenting yeast; fermenting humic in combination with fish, eggs, milk, bananas... Fish protein has become one of the most recommended organic fertilizers for use in agricultural production because it helps reduce the risk of soil contamination, water and air pollution; thereby ensuring a good living environment and growth and development for crops.

Mr. Van's family's model of growing plants using self-fermented fish protein is attracting many farmers to visit, learn and exchange experiences.

“Because my family’s farming area is located at the foot of a rocky mountain, I pay special attention to fertilization to improve soil quality and provide appropriate nutrition for plants. In addition to composted manure, I also use self-composted fish protein and find it has many benefits. It helps balance the pH of the soil, creates an environment for microorganisms to grow, and brings long-term and sustainable results because the plants are not poisoned when fertilized too much. Thanks to that, my family’s fruit garden always grows well. Every year, my family earns 800 million VND after deducting expenses,” Mr. Van shared.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Vo Xuan Bao - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Chu Pah district - informed: After the Association coordinated with a number of units to organize seminars and training for farmer members on the method of composting organic fish protein, a number of households in the district have successfully applied it.

This method brings many benefits such as: improving soil fertility, developing soil ecosystems, loosening soil sources and helping plants grow healthily, limiting pests and diseases. According to gardeners, self-fermenting organic fish protein helps save investment costs while still ensuring crop productivity and quality.

“In addition to fish composting, many farmers also turn waste, agricultural by-products, and organic waste into fertilizer for plants, especially producing fertilizer from earthworms and calcium worms. This is a direction for developing clean, effective, and sustainable agricultural production for farmers,” Mr. Bao affirmed.
