Enhancing economic empowerment, helping ethnic minority women in Son La reduce poverty

The project " Economic empowerment of ethnic minority women through the development of clean bamboo shoot chains" opens up opportunities for economic development, job creation, and increased income for people, especially ethnic minorities.

The project "Economic empowerment of ethnic minority women through the development of clean bamboo shoot chains" under the Australian Government's GREAT Program has helped many localities in Son La province expand the area of bamboo shoot cultivation; build models of linking production and processing of bamboo shoots according to the value chain, opening up opportunities for economic development, job creation, and increasing income for people, especially ethnic minorities.

To date, the project "Economic empowerment of ethnic minority women through the development of clean bamboo shoot chains" has been implemented in 19 communes of 5 districts: Bac Yen, Phu Yen, Sop Cop, Song Ma and Van Ho, with 7 cooperatives, 34 cooperative groups, and more than 2,900 participating households.

The project has supported the planting of over 1,000 hectares of octagonal bamboo; built 3 seedling nurseries, with a scale of 50,000 bamboo seedlings/year; supported 23 improved bamboo shoot boilers, 4 solar dryers and 2 processing factories for cooperatives; consulted on the establishment of export bamboo shoot production chains between farmers - cooperatives - cooperatives - export enterprises.

The project contributes to poverty reduction and income improvement for ethnic minority women in Son La.

Specifically, implementing the Project "Economic empowerment of ethnic minority women through the development of clean bamboo shoot chains in Van Ho district", currently, the area of ​​bamboo growing for bamboo shoots in Van Ho district has increased to more than 500 hectares, concentrated in the communes of Tan Xuan, Xuan Nha and Chieng Xuan. The project also supports cooperatives to invest in building factories, solar dryers, purchasing and processing bamboo shoots effectively; connecting consumption with export companies, creating stable jobs, increasing income for ethnic minorities, especially women.

In Phu Yen district, the project also supported female farmers to plant new bamboo shoots; establish cooperatives, link with farmers to build raw material areas, purchase and process bamboo shoots locally and in neighboring areas.

Opening up a new direction in economic development, contributing to hunger eradication and poverty reduction, and increasing income for ethnic minority women, in the coming time, the project will continue to integrate gender in inclusive poverty reduction, focusing on promoting gender equality through improving the economic efficiency of agricultural production and tourism development in Son La province, phase 2, implemented until the end of March 2027 in the districts: Bac Yen, Sop Cop, Quynh Nhai, Van Ho and Muong La, Son La province with a total value of over 42 billion VND; contributing to increasing income for ethnic minority women.
