Staff of the Provincial Center for Irrigation and Clean Water check the operation of the main culvert in Tan An City.

According to the provincial Irrigation and Clean Water Center, by early May 2025, the province had 5,452 irrigation works, serving irrigation for 48,443 hectares of rice, 82,272 hectares of short-term industrial crops and fruit trees. This system extends from culverts, dykes, electric pumping stations to large and small irrigation works with clear management levels from the central government, province to district.

Specifically, the whole province has 870 irrigation culverts, of which the Provincial Center for Irrigation and Clean Water manages 51 culverts (2 large culverts, 43 medium culverts, 6 small culverts), the remaining 819 culverts are managed by districts, towns and cities.

Regarding the dike system, the Central Government manages two key routes: the dike protecting Tan Hung town and Vinh Hung town. Both are level III dikes, with a dike crest elevation of 5.5-6.0m, capable of preventing floods in the main season exceeding alert level III at Tan Hung station. These two dike routes protect a total of more than 26,000 people and 246 hectares of cultivated land. At the same time, the province manages 25 dike routes with a total length of 262.5km, serving more than 53,000 hectares of productive land; the district manages 1,423 dike routes with a total length of more than 6,231km, mainly half-dike embankments serving seasonal flood prevention.

In addition, the province currently has 240 electric pumping stations, of which 8 stations are managed by the Provincial Center for Irrigation and Clean Water, serving more than 13,000 hectares of cultivated land; 14 stations are managed by districts, serving about 2,000 hectares of cultivated land; 220 stations are invested and managed by private individuals, distributed in the Dong Thap Muoi region, serving more than 38,000 hectares of cultivated land.

The whole province currently has 870 irrigation sluices serving agricultural production and people's lives.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Lua (Hung Thanh commune, Tan Hung district) shared: “Previously, at the beginning of the rice production season, especially the Summer-Autumn crop , farmers were worried about the risk of water shortage for production, especially in high mound areas. Since the electric pumping stations were installed, we have been able to take the initiative in water sources and feel secure in planting on schedule.”

Director of the Provincial Center for Irrigation and Clean Water - Trang Tan Tai said: "The Center continues to review, invest, upgrade and expand dykes, sewer systems, and electric pumping stations to ensure not only agricultural production but also natural disaster prevention and control, and stabilize people's livelihoods. In 2025 alone, nearly 200 irrigation projects will be deployed across the province."

The irrigation system is considered the “backbone” to ensure safe agricultural production, especially in the context of climate change, saltwater intrusion and increasingly complex extreme rain and floods. Methodical investment, clear decentralization and close coordination between management levels are helping the province to be proactive in regulating water resources, minimizing damage caused by natural disasters and improving the efficiency of agricultural production./.
