Prolonged heat, electricity consumption continuously sets new records

In the context of widespread heat wave continuing to cover the Northern region and along the strip of land from Thanh Hoa to Khanh Hoa, the Northern power system and the National power system simultaneously set new records in capacity and electricity consumption on July 18.

According to the National Electricity System and Market Operation Company (NSMO), from July 17 to 19, the temperature in the Northern region will generally range from 35 - 38°C, with relative humidity dropping to 50 - 60%. Some localities recorded temperatures exceeding 38°C such as Son Tay ( Hanoi : 38.8°C), Son Dong (Bac Ninh: 38.4°C) or Bac Me (Tuyen Quang: 38.2°C).

Due to extreme weather conditions, the demand for electricity skyrocketed, causing the maximum power consumption in the North to reach 26,998 MW on July 18, 2025 - the highest since the beginning of the year, an increase of 1,458 MW compared to the same period in 2024, equivalent to an increase of 5.7%. At the same time, the national electricity consumption reached 1,066.6 million kWh, an increase of 4% over the same period last year; of which, the North consumed 551.8 million kWh, an increase of 4.2%.

Previously, the Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC) said that at 10:30 p.m. on July 17, 2025, electricity consumption in 17 northern provinces and cities (from Ha Tinh and beyond, excluding Hanoi) reached 18,242 MW - the highest level since the beginning of the year.

This consumption level has surpassed the previous record of 18,084 MW recorded on the evening of June 2, 2025, and far surpassed the peak electricity consumption in 2024 of 17,300 MW at 22:00 on August 10, 2024./.

Despite the sudden increase in load due to prolonged heat, the national power system still maintains safe, stable and reliable operation thanks to the careful and proactive preparation of NSMO, Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), power corporations and power generation units.

The power grid system is optimally operated, especially at key 500kV transformer stations such as Hoa Binh (now in Phu Tho province), Thuong Tin (Hanoi) and Hiep Hoa (Bac Ninh) - important nodes in power transmission.

Specifically, the 500kV Hoa Binh transformer operated at a load level of about 93%. Thuong Tin and Hiep Hoa stations recorded load levels of 89% and 85% respectively, both within the prescribed safety limits.

The lowest voltage on the system was recorded at Viet Tri station (Phu Tho) at approximately 498kV, ensuring technical standards, contributing to maintaining the stability of the entire power system during peak load times.

In addition to high load pressure, the operation of the power system is also in a complicated situation due to the upcoming impact of storm WIPHA - storm number 3 in 2025. According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the storm entered the northeastern sea area of the North East Sea from the morning of July 19, with strong winds of level 9, gusts of level 12 and is forecast to continue to strengthen, possibly affecting the Gulf of Tonkin on July 21-22.

Faced with this situation, NSMO has proactively developed and implemented disaster response plans under the direction of the Ministry of Industry and Trade in Official Dispatch No. 5305/CD-BCT dated July 17, 2025. The Company is currently closely monitoring storm developments, closely coordinating with hydropower reservoir management units to properly regulate according to inter-reservoir procedures, ensuring safe system operation.

At the same time, flexible power dispatch solutions, coordinated with power transmission and distribution units, are also deployed synchronously to limit risks during storms affecting the national power grid.

With the proactive and effective coordination between units in the entire electricity sector, the national power system continues to affirm its ability to operate stably, safely and continuously, effectively meeting load demand in extreme weather conditions, while being ready to respond to unusual situations caused by natural disasters.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, maintaining the operation of the power system at high load levels for a long time poses a great challenge for system dispatch, safe operation of the power grid, as well as the risk of overload and local incidents in densely populated areas.

Faced with this situation, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, NSMO and the electricity industry recommend that people and businesses need to raise awareness of using electricity safely, economically and effectively.

Specifically, people should limit the simultaneous use of many high-capacity electrical devices during peak hours (from 11:30 to 15:00 and from 20:00 to 23:00); adjust the air conditioner temperature to a reasonable level (from 26 degrees Celsius or higher, combined with the use of fans) to both ensure health and avoid system overload.

Customers should prioritize using electrical equipment with energy-saving labels, turn off unnecessary equipment, unplug when not in use, and limit the simultaneous use of many high-power devices during peak hours. Research and install self-consumption rooftop solar power systems.

In addition, authorities also emphasized that safe use of electricity to prevent fire and explosion is extremely important, especially in prolonged hot and dry weather conditions.

People need to check and maintain the electrical system in their home periodically; do not plug too many electrical devices into the same outlet; do not let electrical devices operate continuously for long periods of time without supervision.

Installation of anti-leakage and anti-overload devices is also recommended to limit the risk of fire from household electrical systems.

In the context of climate change causing increasingly extreme and prolonged heat waves, using electricity economically not only helps reduce pressure on the national power system, ensuring stable power supply but also contributes to environmental protection and sustainable development.
