NATO announces number of tanks and armored vehicles donated to Ukraine

NATO Secretary General announced that the alliance has transferred 230 tanks and 1,550 armored vehicles to Ukraine, almost all of the combat vehicles as committed.

At a press conference on April 27, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that NATO member countries "have trained and equipped about nine new Ukrainian armored brigades." "This will put Ukraine in a strong position to continue to regain areas controlled by Russia," Mr. Stoltenberg said.

"We have delivered to Ukraine more than 98% of the pledged equipment, including more than 1,550 armored vehicles, 230 tanks and other equipment, and a large amount of ammunition," Secretary General Stoltenberg affirmed.

Previously, General Christopher Cavoli, commander of the US European Command (EUCOM), also said on April 26 that the West had delivered more than 98% of tanks and armored vehicles to Ukraine as committed.

However, Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak denied the information, saying that "98% is too big a number". Mr. Podolyak said Ukraine lacked ammunition, especially for large-caliber artillery, and called on the West to send more weapons and equipment.

According to Mr. Podolyak, the current speed of weapons deliveries allows the Ukrainian army to carry out certain operations on the front line. "Ukraine will never have enough weapons and equipment when facing an opponent like Russia," Mr. Podolyak said.

Dozens of Western countries have provided weapons or pledged nearly $60 billion in military aid to Ukraine, with the United States leading the way with a series of aid packages totaling more than $35.4 billion. Ukraine recently received British-made Challenger 2 main battle tanks and German-made Leopard 2s.

Michael Kofman, an expert at the US-based Center for Naval Studies, said the West had overcome the logistical challenge of getting the weapons and ammunition to Ukraine. However, getting them to Ukrainian units on the front lines was a different matter entirely.
