The new version of Russia's anti-submarine aircraft retains the features of the IL-38 with 4 engines and will be equipped with TV-7 117 turboprop engines. In addition, detailed information about this new aircraft model has not been disclosed.
According to experts, the new aircraft version is equipped with the most modern equipment, including a digital computer system, a multi-purpose search and observation complex, and radio sonobuoys.
Compared to the IL-38, the new version's weapons are also more diverse. In particular, the new anti-submarine aircraft will be assembled with components and electronic systems entirely manufactured in Russia.
The IL-38 is a medium-range anti-submarine and patrol aircraft of the Soviet Navy, developed on the basis of the IL-18 passenger aircraft, produced from 1967-1972. The Soviet Union built 60 IL-38s, the latest version being the IL-38N.
In addition to other anti-submarine weapons such as depth charges, torpedoes, and mines, the first version of the IL-38 was also equipped with radio sonobuoys to track and detect enemy submarines.
The anti-submarine version IL-38N is equipped with the Novella multi-purpose search and observation complex, which can detect enemy submarines at a distance of 320km. Not only that, this system can simultaneously track dozens of underwater targets, surface targets and targets emitting radio waves.
The combat radius of IL-38 and IL-38N reaches 2,500km, maximum flight speed reaches 650km/h, and can fly at a maximum altitude of 10km.
Russia currently owns about 25 IL-38 and IL-38N aircraft. Of these, the number still in operation is not announced.
According to the military news site Military Balanse, as of 2022, the Russian naval air force will have 1 regiment and 1 squadron of IL-38 and IL-38N, so the number of Russian IL-38 and IL-38N anti-submarine aircraft is equivalent to 24.
In addition to the Russian Navy, the Indian Navy also possesses this type of anti-submarine aircraft.
