A statement from Russia's National Investigative Committee said judge Rosario Salvatore Aitala and prosecutor Khan Karim Asad Ahmad were both charged with “preparing an attack on a representative of a foreign state under international protection with the aim of further complicating international relations”.

The convictions could result in prison terms of up to 12 years for each of the individuals accused. The commission said other ICC officials are also under investigation.
"So far, the investigations have gathered enough evidence to indict in absentia the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court Khan Karim Assad Ahmad and the judge of the International Criminal Court Rosario Salvatore Aitala," Russia's Investigative Committee said.
According to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes against Internationally Protected Persons of December 14, 1973, heads of state enjoy absolute immunity from the jurisdiction of foreign states, TASS news agency quoted.
