Russia and Ukraine dispute prisoner exchange

VTC NewsVTC News03/11/2024

Ukraine's president has expressed his displeasure at Western allies' inaction on the new developments, while Russia's warning to the US about World War III is the latest notable development in the conflict.

Yesterday (November 2), Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused Ukraine of sabotaging the exchange of war prisoners between the two countries. According to her, the Russian Defense Ministry had offered to return 935 Ukrainian prisoners, but the other side only accepted less than a third.

" Ukraine is sabotaging the prisoner exchange process, which has already brought results. Why is this so? Because Ukraine is only focused on exchanging prisoners from certain battalions. They are only interested in certain units, soldiers from these battalions, which we describe as extremist, terrorist.

This year, the Russian Defense Ministry submitted to the Headquarters for Coordination of the Treatment of Servicemen a proposal to return 935 Ukrainian prisoners of war. Remember this number, but how many of its citizens did Ukraine get back? Yes, only 279.

Meanwhile, the Russian Human Rights Committee also accused Ukraine of politicizing the prisoner exchange.

However, Ukraine has rejected the claims from Russia. According to the Human Rights Commissioner of the Ukrainian Parliament, Dmytro Lubinets, the country is always ready to exchange prisoners of war with Russia, and at the same time asked Russia to provide a list of prisoners who want to be exchanged.

It is known that Russia and Ukraine have regularly exchanged prisoners in a third country since the conflict broke out. The most recent prisoner exchange took place in mid-October when each side returned and received 95 people.

In addition to the controversy over the prisoner exchange, the developments in the Russia-Ukraine conflict continue to attract international attention. The Ukrainian president yesterday expressed his dissatisfaction with the West's lack of action in response to information about the presence of North Korean troops in Russia. Mr. Zelenskyi continued to call on allies to grant permission for his country to use long-range weapons to attack targets on Russian territory.

In fact, the US and its Western allies have just taken new steps to increase military aid to Ukraine. The US has announced a $425 million aid package, including air defense systems, rockets, artillery, armored vehicles and anti-tank weapons. Norway has also announced a $118 million aid package for Ukraine. The UK and Germany are planning to cooperate in equipping Ukraine’s Sea King helicopters with missile systems. South Korea has also left open the possibility of considering all possibilities of supporting Ukraine if North Korean troops enter the war.

Responding to the West's moves, Russian officials warned that Ukraine was dragging the West into a direct confrontation. Yesterday, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that the West should take Russia's nuclear warnings seriously to avoid World War III. According to Mr. Medvedev, the US and Europe are lacking "foresight and sophistication" in assuming that Russia will never cross a certain line.
