On the evening of August 2, the exhibition of paintings combined with contemporary fashion design with the theme of Lien Canh - Shapes of Lotus by painter Huong Color, painter Nguyen Hoang Ngan and designer Trinh Bich Thuy officially opened at Sigma Gallery (An Phu ward, Ho Chi Minh City).
The exhibition features more than 45 contemporary paintings and designs using traditional materials such as silk, dó paper, ceramics and linen.
Another view of lotus
Within the framework of the exhibition, designer Trinh Bich Thuy introduced the Van Tuong Lien collection, which used the main materials of silk woven from silkworms and lotus silk.
The highlight of the designs is the meticulously attached lotus and cloud motifs. In terms of color, designer Trinh Bich Thuy chose soft tones such as the color of early morning sunlight, young leaves, and flower petals, creating a clear, poetic space.
Designer Trinh Bich Thuy told Tuoi Tre Online : “Although they are fashion works, they have the appearance of paintings. I have created many lotus collections over the past 20 years.
This time, I look at lotus from a different angle, not only as a familiar flower to Vietnamese people but also as a surreal symbol, connecting nature and human consciousness.
When looking at lotus, besides seeing a flower, I also see circles and soft movements. From that inspiration, I put these lines into the shapes of designs such as drifting clouds, a blooming lotus bud. This can be called a miniature universe - a world of lotus and clouds, of earth and sky, close and poetic.

Honoring traditional materials
Another special thing is that the designer uses handmade materials from many traditional craft villages of Vietnam as a tribute.
“Every time I come into direct contact with the artisans, I can clearly feel their deep love for their profession. There are artisans who hand-draw each thread of silk, weave each meter of fabric with dedication and patience, to preserve a part of cultural memory.
For me, the silk threads woven into fabric are not just materials but a humane story. When the craftsman chooses to draw silk by hand, it means giving the silkworm a chance to live its full natural life cycle. It is this patience, meticulousness and love that makes each silk thread seem to contain the soul of the artisan" - Trinh Bich Thuy shared with Tuoi Tre Online .
To make fabric from lotus silk, workers sit for hours to draw each slender lotus silk thread from the lotus stem. The work is elaborate, requiring perseverance and sophisticated techniques.

One of the special designs in the collection is a shirt made from a piece of fabric that the craftsman let the silkworms spin and weave into a layer of natural silk cotton. Trinh Bich Thuy used gold glitter thread to embroider small details, creating a unique design.
Designer Trinh Bich Thuy is the mother of runner-up Tuong San. She, along with runner-up Diem Trang and beauty queen Huynh Thuy Vi, attended the fashion show.
Tuong San wears a yếm shirt combined with long pants made from pure Vietnamese, light, and environmentally friendly material made by her mother.
“I always hope that when someone wears these designs, they will feel positive energy, feel light, healthy and like they are living in a space in harmony with nature,” designer Trinh Bich Thuy confided.
