Preventing bird flu: Strict control, vaccination and good farming organization
In response to the warnings from the Government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development about the risk of avian influenza outbreaks due to illegal transportation of poultry across the border, bringing pathogens into the country, our province urgently strengthened control and prevention of illegal transportation of poultry into the locality; continued to organize disease prevention well, vaccinate according to regulations and organize good raising to maintain the stability of poultry flocks.
According to the Vietnam Animal Disease Information Management System, in the first 5 months of 2023, the country recorded 11 outbreaks of avian influenza in 7 provinces and cities nationwide, with nearly 13,000 poultry infected, dead and destroyed. The domestic avian influenza epidemic is breaking out, in addition to the complicated situation of illegal transportation and trading of poultry and poultry products across the border into Vietnam. This is one of the factors that increases the risk of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus strains and other dangerous infectious diseases entering Vietnam from abroad; affecting poultry farming activities.
In Binh Dinh province, although there have been no recorded cases of illegal poultry transportation from outside into or through the province, the Provincial People's Committee has issued a document directing the agricultural sector and localities to proactively implement measures to prevent, stop and control the transportation and slaughter of poultry in the province.

Accordingly, the Provincial People's Committee assigned the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and localities to strengthen quarantine and slaughter control; step up inspection, supervision and early detection of acts of transporting poultry and poultry products of unknown origin, without presenting full animal quarantine certificates; bordering localities are required to focus on inspection, control, and proactively coordinate in providing information to prevent cases of illegal transportation of poultry from outside.
According to Mr. Huynh Ngoc Diep, Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development), although Binh Dinh province has not recorded any illegal transportation of poultry into the area, the risk of illegal transportation of poultry through the locality cannot be ruled out. Therefore, the Department urgently advises the Department's leaders in directing the work to promptly deploy specific solutions. On the part of the Department, it continues to promote professional work in vaccination, assign veterinary staff to work in the area to coordinate with the grassroots veterinary force to closely monitor the situation and promptly prevent the transportation and slaughter of poultry of unknown origin. In particular, the Department strengthens the quarantine of animals and animal products at the Cu Mong Traffic Quarantine Station, arranging forces to be on duty at checkpoints to ensure that no means of transporting animals and animal products moving through the province are missed.
In the first 5 months of 2023, the livestock situation in the province generally developed stably. The total livestock herd in the province increased compared to the same period in 2022, specifically the total herd of cows is estimated at 306,640, an increase of 3% over the same period; the herd of pigs is estimated at 692,850, the herd of poultry is estimated at 9.4 million, an increase of 9.4% over the same period. Thanks to proactive implementation of monitoring, vaccination, and disease prevention, the livestock and poultry epidemic situation in the province continues to be controlled, with no outbreaks. |
