Combination of literature and history
The novel Warlord Ton That Thuyet depicts the portrait of the Minister of Infantry of the Nguyen Dynasty, Ton That Thuyet, which was first introduced to readers in 2003, now returns with a new look. This is also the latest edition added to the book series Thousand Years of Vietnamese History, with 30 published works, with investment and consistency in the art.
Thousand Years of Vietnamese History is a book series published by Kim Dong Publishing House, combining literature and history, bringing to readers, especially children, many vivid stories about heroes and celebrities who have contributed to the thousands of years of history of the Vietnamese people such as Hai Ba Trung, Tran Hung Dao, Le Loi, Nguyen Trai, Bui Thi Xuan, Nguyen Binh Khiem, Nguyen Truong To... The authors of the works in this book series are To Hoai, Hoai Anh, Ha An, Vu Ngoc Tien, Hoang Cong Khanh, An Cuong, Le Minh Quoc...
According to Ms. Vu Thi Quynh Lien, Deputy Director - Editor-in-Chief of Kim Dong Publishing House, Thousand Years of Vietnamese History has been nurtured by the unit for quite a long time. In fact, many works in the book series have been published over many years and are included in different sets and literary bookshelves. These are all valuable literary works by famous authors in the field of historical literature, very necessary and very worthy to be on the bookshelf of every family. However, if it is not reorganized into a book series, without a clear positioning for the new generation of readers, it will be a loss for the work and readers.
“With the desire to help readers visualize more clearly the context of each work in the flow of history, in Thousand Years of Vietnamese History, we have arranged it by dynasty, from the dawn of the nation to the last feudal dynasty, the Nguyen Dynasty. We also added an introductory information page including the historical flow, an overview of the dynasty as well as prominent milestones, thereby helping readers have more suggestions to continue learning about the history of the nation,” Ms. Vu Thi Quynh Lien shared.
“The book series Thousand Years of Vietnamese History will continue to be expanded, so that we can “tell children” more about the history and famous people of the nation. For now, we prioritize works that have been contacted for copyright, especially with the same historical figure that many works mention. In addition, we want to find more works about other historical figures that the book series does not currently have,” Ms. Vu Thi Quynh Lien shared.
Opportunities for young writers and readers
Poet Le Minh Quoc believes that historical stories are never out of date, because the most positive meaning of “reviewing the past to learn the present” is to draw lessons and experiences for the present and the future. All events and people from the past are not “artifacts” kept in museums, hidden under the waves of time, but are always lively and flexible, suggesting to us many things to ponder.
“With Thousand Years of Vietnamese History, young people can approach history in a “softer” way, not dry, because the details of the characters’ lives are attractive in themselves. I hope that not only Kim Dong Publishing House but also other publishing houses will join in, because thinking deeply, we will agree that if we want to preserve and promote national identity and national character, we cannot ignore the history of our country,” poet Le Minh Quoc expressed.
In fact, historical topics are increasingly gaining more attention, especially among young people. Typically, at the first Kim Dong Literature Award, which is coming to its final stage, among nearly 40 published works, Thai Long Trang Si by Mai Ngoi Thanh Chau (real name Thanh Chau), an author of the 9X generation living and working in Ben Tre , has exploited historical topics in an impressive way. Previously, this young author had made his mark with a series of works on historical topics such as: Hoa Duc, Thanh Duc Dung Nghia Truyen, Tay Son Phung Than Ky, Viet Su Kieu Hung (co-author, 4 volumes).
Sharing about the opportunities for historical works by young authors today, author Thanh Chau said: “Recently, historical works have been welcomed by many readers. Many young authors have also focused on exploiting this topic and they have had unique perspectives and literary experiences. This is the motivation for me and many other young authors to continue pursuing and writing about historical topics.”
As Thanh Chau shared, the literary world has recently seen the emergence of a series of young authors who are passionate about the country's history. These include Viet Chi, Tra My, Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, An An, Hoang Yen, Dong Mien, Inako... No longer confined to a familiar motif, based on a story or a real character in history, they freely create with different genres and techniques, such as detective, spiritual, romantic, time travel... Thanks to that, today's readers have the opportunity to understand historical events and feel the spirit, emotions, and thoughts of the characters in the context of the time of their ancestors.
Ms. Vu Thi Quynh Lien said that the book series Thousand Years of Vietnamese History is not limited to classic works or famous authors, but hopes to welcome works by new authors that fit the criteria of the book series. The fact that many young readers and authors are interested and passionate about history is a very good sign. Hopefully, there will be a new generation of young authors to extend the list of historical storytellers.
