Artist Nguyen Viet Cuong is famous for his artworks made from various materials such as cardboard, flyers... He often picks up familiar things around him and then experiments, turning "zero-dollar" materials into artistic language.

Recently, the work Flow by artist Nguyen Viet Cuong won the highest prize in the second year of the UOB Painting of the Year competition in Vietnam, in the category of Famous Artists. The work attracted attention because it was made from materials familiar in life.

Sharing about the process, the artist said that he processed, cleaned and crushed the coal into pebbles before sieving and sprinkling it on the canvas surface. The rice was ground into powder, mixed with glue and then a funnel was used to shape the solution to flow down the black coal layer.

This combination creates a contemporary ink landscape painting with a poetic dialogue between black and white, evoking the graceful beauty of the stalactite terrain in caves in Vietnam.

"I hope my work can inspire viewers to reflect on the effects of wet rice agriculture and heavy industries on natural landscapes and indigenous human practices," artist Nguyen Viet Cuong shared.

As the top winner in the Established Artist category, artist Nguyen Viet Cuong received a cash prize of VND500 million and will compete for the UOB Painting of the Year Southeast Asia 2024 award alongside winning artists from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

The award will be announced on November 13 at an awards ceremony in Singapore.

The UOB Painting of the Year, first held in Singapore in 1982, is one of the most prestigious art competitions in Southeast Asia. The competition aims to discover artistic talents and provide them with an opportunity to showcase their works to the wider community in the region.
