Artist Nguyen Viet Cuong is famous for his artworks made from various materials such as cardboard and flyers. He often gathers familiar things around him, then experiments and transforms these "free" materials into artistic language.

Recently, artist Nguyen Viet Cuong's artwork, "Flow," won the top prize at the second annual UOB Painting of the Year competition in Vietnam, in the Established Artist category. The artwork attracted attention for being made from familiar materials found in everyday life.

Sharing about the process, the artist said he processed, cleaned, and crushed coal into pebbles before sifting and sprinkling them onto the canvas surface. Rice was ground into powder, mixed with glue, and then shaped using a funnel so that the solution flowed down the layer of black coal.

This combination creates a contemporary ink painting landscape with a poetic dialogue between black and white, evoking the graceful beauty of the stalactite formations in Vietnamese caves.

"I hope my work can inspire viewers to reflect on the impact of rice farming and heavy industries on the natural landscape and local customs," shared artist Nguyen Viet Cuong.

As the top winner in the Established Artist category, artist Nguyen Viet Cuong received a cash prize of 500 million VND and will be shortlisted for the UOB Painting of the Year Southeast Asia 2024 award alongside winners from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.

The winners will be announced on November 13th at an awards ceremony in Singapore.

First held in 1982 in Singapore, the UOB Painting of the Year is one of the most prestigious art competitions in Southeast Asia. The competition aims to discover artistic talent and provide them with an opportunity to showcase their work to a wider community in the region.
