Rob the Original has redefined what it means to be a barber. Using techniques such as sprinkling salt, burning gunpowder, carving watermelons, dusting, cutting and shaving hair... Rob can turn any head into a work of art, especially portraits of world- famous figures such as rap superstar Tupac Shakur, actress Marilyn Monroe, businessman Steve Jobs or martial arts movie star Bruce Lee...

Artist Rob the Original has created a "hair painting" craze that has never been seen before on social media. After Rob draws a portrait of a celebrity's hair and shows it to them, they are amazed and can't believe how realistic it is, and these portraits quickly go viral on social media and media.

Cut Your Own Hair and Become a Hair Stylist

Rob the Original's real name is Rob Ferrel, Mexican, born on September 17, 1985 in the United States. He is the 5th child in a family of 9 children. When he was young, Rob loved to create art, so his parents gave him crayons and paper to practice drawing and entertain himself. Rob never thought of becoming a real artist. He just considered drawing a hobby. Growing up, Rob did many jobs that had nothing to do with art, such as a chef, a jeweler, and a construction worker.

Since he didn’t have much money, Rob cut his own hair as well as that of his friends and family. He never considered barbering as a job. One day, Rob needed a haircut but his clippers were broken so he decided to go to a local barbershop. When he told the barber that he could cut his own hair, he was offered a job. Kids started coming in asking for simple haircuts, and Rob found it easy.

Rob is self-taught, never having been to art school. He draws instinctively, using paint on dirty windows and cars. He experiments with foods like cornbread and gravy, butter, ketchup. He uses these as his portrait materials. Rob also uses a lot of objects, like clothes, gunpowder, wood stains. His basic concept is to make art out of anything he can think of.

According to him, painting on the wall with paint would take a lot of time and would not attract attention like when he painted with tomato sauce on the table and it only took an hour to do, so he wanted to find a unique way to express his work and attract people's attention.

One day, he decided to challenge himself and do something he had never done before: draw portraits using hair. His first model was his favorite rapper: Tupac Shakur. Now, Rob can draw with anything he likes or his clients request.

Pioneer of hair portraiture

It takes Rob the Original an average of 1.5 to 2.5 hours to complete a hair painting. Rob told writer Katharina Lina that the painting that took him the longest was The Last Supper , which he modeled after Leonardo da Vinci, a complex and detailed fresco. The end result was well worth it, as it has been viewed by millions of people around the world.

Works by Rob the Original

Rob the Original makes over 200 flights a year to paint hair for clients. $500 haircuts and portraits, $3,500 hair painting demonstrations… It’s not a common way for a barber to make money, but it’s become a habit for Rob The Original, an artist who turns rap superstars into 3D hair portraits.

Having been a barber for nearly 20 years, artist Rob the Original is no longer simply a barber, he has become an artist of the BarberArt trend, an online phenomenon with 3D portraits made of hair with over 1 million followers on Instagram.
