The patient is Mrs. Tran Thi Ch. (107 years old), residing in Duong Huy ward, Cam Pha city, Quang Ninh province. According to her family, 2 months ago, Mrs. Ch. fell and hit her buttocks on a hard floor. Seeing that she was old and weak, after being examined at a local health facility, her family decided to take her home to take care of her and monitor her. However, her condition became more and more serious, her right thigh was swollen and painful, she lost mobility, and she depended on her children for daily activities. Her family took her to Quang Ninh General Hospital for examination. After examination and X-ray, the doctors diagnosed that Mrs. Ch. had a fractured right femur and was scheduled for surgery to replace her hip joint.
Recognizing that this is a rare elderly patient with a high risk of complications during and after surgery, the doctors of the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology conducted a consultation between the departments of Cardiology, Intensive Care, and Anesthesia, screened for all associated diseases, prevented thrombosis, and predicted risks in advance to have a surgical plan, ensuring the highest safety for the patient.
Directly performing surgery for Mr. Ch., Dr. Luong Toan Thang - Head of the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Quang Ninh General Hospital said: "Performing hip replacement surgery for a 107-year-old patient is a challenge with many risks of complications. However, if surgery is not performed because of old age, the patient can only lie in one place and endure pain every day, the family must have someone to take care of them 24/7, lying down for a long time can cause pressure ulcers, stagnant pneumonia, the body gradually becomes exhausted, leading to a high risk of death. Therefore, even though Mr. Ch. is 107 years old, we still decided to perform hip replacement surgery for the patient. This is extremely necessary, helping the elderly patient to be healthy, happy and return to normal life."
In addition to the technical requirements of surgery, the psychological factor in the elderly is also extremely important. The patient was given spinal anesthesia so that he was awake during the surgery. The surgical team performed the surgery professionally, while talking and encouraging him so that he could undergo the surgery with a comfortable and happy mentality. The hip replacement surgery at the hospital for the oldest patient ever was successful. After the surgery, the patient's health was stable, the surgical wound was dry, and she was able to sit up and prepare to be discharged. Previously, doctors from the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Quang Ninh General Hospital, successfully performed surgery on a 102-year-old patient.
