Along with its peaceful and ancient atmosphere, the hospitality and honesty of the people living in the Mekong Delta region further enhance the appeal of the cultural heritage site - Dong Hoa Hiep ancient village.

National historical and cultural relic

According to information from the Department of Culture , Sports and Tourism of Tien Giang province , located in the lower Mekong River basin, Dong Hoa Hiep ancient village (Dong Hoa Hiep commune, Cai Be district, Tien Giang province) is the first ancient village in the Southern region of Vietnam to be recognized as a national historical and cultural relic.

Going back in history, during the Nguyen Dynasty, from 1732 to 1757, this place was chosen as the administrative center of Long Ho Prefecture. During those 25 years, Dong Hoa Hiep village became home to many officials, making the area prosperous and wealthy.

From the late 19th to the early 20th century, wealthy households in the village built many spacious houses with a blend of Eastern and Western architecture, giving the village a distinctive architectural and landscape compared to other localities.

Despite experiencing many historical events, many houses in the ancient village of Dong Hoa Hiep still retain their original architecture, reflecting a special period of cultural exchange where traditional values harmoniously combined with modern trends.

Currently, the village still has 7 houses built 150-220 years ago and 29 houses built 80-100 years ago. Prominent among these ancient houses are those of Mr. Liem, Mr. Kiet, Mr. Duc, Mr. Xoat, and others.

Peaceful ancient architecture amidst the riverside setting.

The old houses in Dong Hoa Hiep all have traditional frames made of precious wood, with tiled roofs. Some houses have rows of columns and outer walls built of brick, decorated with European motifs.

Each old house is a collection of exquisite wood carvings, evident in the rafters, beams, purlins, door frames, horizontal plaques, and couplets.

The decorative panels in front of the central worship space of the house are often elaborately carved with pine, chrysanthemum, bamboo, and plum blossom motifs, showcasing the skillful craftsmanship of traditional Southern Vietnamese artisans.

Besides their unique architecture, these old houses also preserve many valuable and rare ancient artifacts made of wood, ceramics, and bronze, such as altars, tables and chairs, vases, plates, cups, incense burners, and statues.

The ancient houses in Dong Hoa Hiep village are nestled amidst lush, airy orchards, beside a tranquil riverside landscape, creating a distinctive and attractive scene of an ancient village in the southern region.

If you wish to relax and enjoy local cuisine in a traditional house, you can contact the homeowner in advance through a tourist office. Many houses offer "homestay" services, allowing visitors to experience daily life with the local people.
