Readers can use the library at any time of the day and every day of the week, instead of just using it during office hours. Members can check out books under the supervision of a camera system. Foster is the first 24/7 community library in Victoria, serving a community of about 1,000 people in the town of Foster.
Many libraries, especially in multicultural areas, such as the Lionel Bowen Library in New South Wales, also have programs for newly arrived migrants, such as helping them learn English, connect with the community and learn about Australian life. Many English teachers volunteer at libraries to teach English to new migrants, helping them connect with each other, become more confident in communicating in English and quickly integrate into the community.
To maintain and develop a reading culture, the Australian Government has implemented many initiatives: reading promotion programs in schools, campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of reading.
