Eden Kelly, an Australian female backpacker, was on a solo trip across Asia when she unexpectedly encountered an "unbearable" experience regarding sleeping accommodations on a sleeper bus in Cambodia.
In her recent post, she shared that she was in an awkward situation while traveling by sleeper bus during her backpacking trip . However, what she did not expect was to have to share a bed on the bus with a stranger.

"During the 10-hour journey on the sleeper bus, I had to share a bed with a stranger. I didn't know who that person was or what their gender was," said the Australian girl.
After a nap, the Australian woman woke up to find a strange man lying on her bed. The man saw her holding her phone and waved happily.
The 26-year-old girl admitted that this was one of the most embarrassing situations she had ever experienced and could only laugh because it was awkward.
Luckily, Kelly saw a British couple she had just met lying in a berth not far from hers. She quickly turned to chat with them to avoid the awkwardness of lying next to strangers.
A while later, when she returned to her bed, she saw that the man had asked the bus conductor to change his position. This made her both amused and a little hurt.
"I feel a bit abandoned, but it's good because I have my own bed now," she said.
The female tourist’s story received mixed reviews. Some travelers said they had traveled on sleeper buses in Southeast Asia and had seen double sleeping arrangements. However, some bus companies are still quite comfortable swapping seats if there are still empty seats.
In addition, some people say that if you want to sleep alone, you should inform the bus company when booking a seat to avoid having to sleep with strangers.
Similar to Vietnam, many backpackers often choose sleeper buses for long trips. This means of transport is reasonably priced, but can sometimes cause inconvenience to passengers because there are no toilets on board. Instead, passengers will use the toilets at rest stops.

Aaron Spray, a tourist from Canada who has visited 80 countries and territories, also shared his experience traveling by sleeper bus in Vietnam on Travel magazine.
He said that sleeper buses are very convenient and cost-effective because you can sleep on the bus. However, the staff on the bus may not speak English, which is quite inconvenient.
However, the guest still wanted to experience this type of tourism because he wanted to travel like a local.
Similarly, Tasha Amy (New Zealand) - a travel blogger who experienced a sleeper bus in Vietnam in October 2023 - said that foreign tourists who want to take a sleeper bus need to carefully research the bus company before booking tickets.
"Foreigners are usually larger in stature, while sleeper buses are designed to suit the height of Asians. Therefore, those over 1.8m tall may find it cramped, uncomfortable, and difficult to stretch their legs," he said.
However, most tourists who have experienced this service in Vietnam say that the bus routes are very safe for women and foreign tourists.
