The first kidney transplant patient at Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital has been discharged.

(PLVN) - On April 23, information from the Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital (Quang Ninh province) said that the first kidney transplant patient at the hospital after 2 weeks of treatment and intensive care was discharged, the patient's health is stable, and kidney function has returned to normal.

Patient NTN, 41 years old, address in Quang Yen town ( Quang Ninh province) has end-stage renal failure, undergoing dialysis 3 times/week. Renal function declines, kidney transplant is indicated for treatment. After a professional assessment and careful preparation of resources, the first kidney transplant of Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital was performed on April 8, 2025, the source of donation was from a brain-dead donor.

The transplant was performed by a team of doctors specializing in kidney transplants at the Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital, with professional support from experts at the Viet Duc Friendship Hospital. During the post-operative period, the patient was closely monitored, strictly following the treatment regimen and receiving special care. After 2 weeks, the transplanted kidney progressed well and test results returned to normal. The patient was discharged from the hospital, continued to take medication, and was monitored and re-examined periodically.

Previously, to make this new treatment method successful, Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital had worked hard to develop a project and prepare resources for nearly a year. On March 31, 2025, the Ministry of Health recognized Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital as qualified to perform the technique of removing and transplanting kidneys from living donors and brain-dead donors.
