The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism (DTC) of Lao Cai province coordinated with the Lao Cai Tourism Association and related units to carry out two large-scale art programs named "Thien" and "Dance under the Moon", with the participation of 176 artisans and ethnic people in Sa Pa, Lao Cai and 22 professional actors of the Lao Cai Province Ethnic Art Troupe.

Two programs will be performed on weekend evenings to serve tourists at San Quan, Sa Pa ward, Lao Cai from November 7th, with the quintessence of art connected rhythmically and skillfully by musical performances, animation, dance, singing, panpipes, and instruments... of ethnic communities.

According to Mr. Tran Son Binh, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Lao Cai province, the two programs aim to preserve, transmit and promote the quintessence of local ethnic groups through performing arts combining modern technology such as lighting, stage arrangements, 3D mapping, but still respecting the original culture. This is also an opportunity for the people themselves to directly participate, telling the story of their people through the language of art.

Ethnic minorities in Lao Cai tell stories of cultural heritage through art programs to attract tourists.

Sharing about these artistic products, director Dang Xuan Truong said, “Thieng” combines the art of singing - dancing - music - large-scale visual performance, inspired by the cultural treasure of the Dao community in Sa Pa. The work depicts the connection between earth - water - fire - love - belief; at the same time honoring the sacredness in traditional rituals, especially the cap sac ceremony, symbolizing the maturity and life ethics of the Dao people.

“Through “Thien”, we hope that the audience will receive not only an art program, but also a journey to preserve and recreate identity, evoking belief and cultural pride in the Dao community, contributing to promoting the cultural values of Vietnamese ethnic groups to international friends,” said director Dang Xuan Truong.

“Dance under the Moon” is a dance crystallized from the intense life of the ethnic communities in Sa Pa. The cultural life, beliefs, customs, festivals, labor, production, and folk knowledge are both unique and rich, becoming an endogenous strength, connecting the community and building the homeland. The sounds of leaf trumpets, jew's harps, and bells gently ring in response to the deep and high sounds of panpipes and flutes... The colors of brocade blend with the sounds of the mountains and forests, replacing the opening words: "The vast forest attracts many animals/ The vast house attracts many guests", performed by the ethnic groups of the Red Dao, Mong, Xa Pho, Tay, and Giay.

The organizers of the art programs introduced to the press in Hanoi.

As the scriptwriter of the two programs, Mr. Ha Van Thang said that as a son of this land, from his childhood days following his mother to all the villages, listening to the sounds of the flute, the singing, and feeling the breath of life of the ethnic people, he had dreams. The dream came true when he wrote works of art so that the people could become the subject, telling their own stories.

“For the Dao people, life opens up many paths: building villages, building houses, weddings, funerals, and even coming-of-age ceremonies. Each ceremony and each custom is both familiar and mysterious. It is a world that makes me constantly moved, because even in the rhythm of an industrialized and modernized society, the people still maintain their own identity, original and pure. It is that love that nurtures the belief: If preserved with the heart, with responsibility and with the support of the community, those values will last forever. “Thien” was formed from that idea,” Mr. Ha Van Thang shared.

For director Dang Xuan Truong, “Thien” and “Dance under the Moon” are also a form of gratitude: “We have received a lot from ethnic minorities, so this is a way to repay the favor. Art is the thread that reconnects trust between people.”
