Export skyrocket
According to data released by the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VINAFRUIT), in February, exports coconut Fresh coconut exports reached 13.4 million USD, up 45% over the same period last year. Coconut products exports increased sharply, reaching 23 million USD in February, up 112% over the same period last year. In the first two months of the year, exports of coconut products reached 43.8 million USD, up 86% over the same period last year.
According to VINAFRUIT, the strong increase in revenue from coconut exports is due to the increasing popularity of Vietnamese coconuts in major markets such as the US and China. In the first two months of the year alone, coconut exports to the US reached over 17 million USD, up 46% over the same period last year. Vietnam is now the third largest coconut supplier to China, accounting for more than 20% of the market share in this country.
Some export businesses fresh coconut and coconut products said that this week, the company also received new orders from the Chinese, American and European markets. The number of orders increased sharply compared to last year.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of VINAFRUIT - said: "Americans and Chinese people especially love Vietnamese coconuts because of their characteristic aroma and sweetness. Coconut exports have many advantages such as easy transportation and long preservation time. Besides, coconuts can be processed into many other products such as: dried coconut, coconut milk, canned coconut water... so they are favored by many markets."
More than 600 enterprises are operating in the field of manufacturing and processing coconut products, creating a great advantage for the export industry. Vietnam is currently ranked fourth among countries exporting many coconut products in the Asia-Pacific region and fifth in the world . Vietnamese coconuts are also popular in demanding markets such as the European Union, Canada and South Korea.
In particular, Thailand recently switched production from dried coconut to fresh coconut, resulting in a shortage of raw materials and increased imports of raw coconut from Vietnam.
Fresh coconut 'burnt' row'
According to the Vietnam Coconut Association, this year's coconut crop failed, so output was low, while domestic consumption and export demand was very high. This has helped coconut price Fresh and dried coconut raw materials increased sharply, coconut growers made more profit.
It is forecasted that as the weather begins to turn hot summer, the demand for fresh coconuts both domestically and internationally will continue to increase sharply. This could cause coconut prices to increase, because the main coconut harvest season is not until August and September.
According to a survey, previously, at traditional markets and trading warehouses, the price of fresh coconuts was usually only 10,000 VND/fruit, but since the end of March, the price of fresh coconuts has increased to 15,000 VND/fruit. Currently, the weather is starting to get hot, the demand for coconuts is increasing, the retail price of coconuts has reached 21,000 - 22,000 VND/fruit. This is a record high price in the domestic market.
In Ben Tre , Hau Giang, Tra Vinh - the localities with the largest coconut acreage - people said that coconut prices have continuously increased sharply and the large market demand has made many coconut growers extremely excited.
However, the price of raw coconut has increased, many processing enterprises have difficulty balancing signed contracts with old prices, leading to the risk of losses. Some units are forced to import coconuts from Indonesia or expand their purchasing areas to neighboring provinces to maintain production and meet orders.
According to the Vietnam Coconut Association, to date, fresh coconuts have been exported to more than 40 countries around the world.
With its sweet, refreshing taste, the Siamese coconut variety easily reaches demanding markets. In addition, good preservation technology, the preservation time can be up to 70 days, helping fresh exported coconuts still ensure quality when reaching consumers. Coconut products are also diverse, so Vietnamese coconuts are favored by many markets.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , the country currently has 200,000 hectares of coconut, with an output of 2 million tons/year. Coconut is one of 6 types of trees included in the project and approved project to develop key industrial crops until 2030, bringing economic efficiency to people in many provinces and cities.
