A new study shows that 20-40 year old tourists in Vietnam spend an average of 30 million VND, twice their monthly salary, on a trip .
On July 26, e-commerce platform for travel and experiences Klook released a study showing changes in traveler needs, behaviors and travel trends in 2023 in the Asia- Pacific (APAC) region in general and Vietnam in particular.
The study surveyed 3,000-4,000 people in 12 countries over the past six months, focusing on Gen Z and Millennials. The results showed that travel spending by these two groups of travelers is expected to increase from the second half of 2023.

In a survey of about 300 young Vietnamese people, 36% were willing to spend between $1,000 and $2,000 (VND23-47 million) on each trip. Meanwhile, a report by the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs in the second quarter said that the average income of salaried workers in Vietnam was VND7 million.
Mr. Nguyen Huy Hoang, CEO of Klook Vietnam, commented that the average spending on travel of the above mentioned group of tourists aged 20-40 is not too high. This generation has a good and average income. They tend to travel 1-2 trips per year, so they often invest a large amount of money.
"The level of spending on tourism of young Vietnamese people is lower than the average figure of the Asia- Pacific region," he said.
Nguyen Nhi, 27, a communications employee working in Ho Chi Minh City, said she planned three trips this year. Two of them were overseas trips. Last July, she spent nearly VND30 million on a trekking trip to Kashmir, India. "The cost was nearly two months of my salary, but I don't regret it because I will experience many mountain climbing activities and explore interesting local cultures in North India," Nhi said.
Similarly, nearly half of millennial and Gen Z travelers in the region plan to spend twice their average monthly income on travel. One in three travelers is willing to spend more than $2,000 on their next vacation. This is double the average monthly income per capita across APAC countries, according to the World Bank.
The Chinese market has the highest spending in the region, with about a quarter of the 300-400 respondents saying they were willing to spend an average of $4,000 on a trip.
The study also shows the travel trends of Vietnamese Millennials and Gen Z. 71% prefer nature and outdoor travel experiences, 61% choose cultural experiences and 53% choose underwater activities. "Diving experiences and diving classes have been on the rise in the past 6 months, attracting most of the 20-40 age group," said Mr. Hoang.
Young people tend to travel abroad more than domestically, at a ratio of 60:40. The most popular foreign destinations include Singapore, Thailand and Japan.
