The village chief of the people

BPO - At nearly 70 years old, Mr. Nguyen The Dung, Head of Village 5, Duong 10 Commune, Bu Dang District, still quietly starts work early every day. He has no high-ranking title, no private office, and no flowery statements, but he has something that not everyone has. That is the complete trust of the people. For nearly 15 years, the people here have called him by a simple but precious name: "The village chief of the people's hearts".

Although nearly 70 years old, Mr. Nguyen The Dung is still dedicated to his work.

During nearly 15 years as village chief, Mr. Dung has not only been attached to but also lived his life with full affection for every inch of land and every person here. He is a pioneer in the movements to build new rural areas, donate land for roads, build solidarity houses, and care for the lives of ethnic minorities. His work, as the people here often say, is not noisy, but practical and persistent.

Mr. Bui Van Tuan in village 5 shared: "Uncle Dung does what he says, he never makes empty promises. If we re-elect him, I will still choose him as village chief, because he does a great job, a great job!"

Village 5 is a remote area with more than 500 households and about 2,700 people, of which nearly 80% are ethnic minorities. Economic life is still difficult, and the people's educational level is uneven. Since 2018, Mr. Dung has mobilized people to donate land, cut down perennial crops, and cooperate with the State to open 14 new rural concrete roads, with a total length of nearly 12km. These roads help people travel conveniently, trade, and develop the economy.

In his role as a connector, Mr. Dung mobilized philanthropists and coordinated with Party committees and authorities at all levels to build 24 solidarity houses. In addition, he directly mobilized organizations and individuals to donate an additional VND5-10 million/house so that people in need could have a more spacious house. Thereby, he helped many poor households have new homes.

Mr. Dung’s work is not limited to office hours. Rain or shine, early morning or late at night, if someone needs him, he will be there. Mobilizing land donations, reconciling family conflicts, providing support when sick, taking children to get vaccinated… he does everything and does it with great care and dedication.

Mr. Nguyen The Dung (middle) and commune leaders visited and inspected one of the rural traffic routes where he mobilized people to cut down crops and donate land to build roads.

Ms. Nong Thi Luy, Secretary of the Party Committee of Duong 10 Commune, commented: “Mr. Dung is very enthusiastic and responsible in implementing policies from superiors, always maintaining high prestige in the community as well as the Party Committee and the commune government. Mr. Dung's role is very important in mass mobilization work in the village.”

Nearly 70 years old, he should have been able to rest, but he still regularly attended meetings, propaganda sessions, and mobilized people to learn a trade, do business, protect the environment, and preserve the cultural traditions of ethnic minorities. With his practical contributions, in 2025, he was honored by the Provincial People's Committee as one of 50 outstanding citizens, recognizing his silent but profound contributions over the years.

When asked what made him stick with this job for so long, he smiled lightly: “Now that I am old, I have asked to retire many times in village meetings, but the villagers have not allowed me to. Because as long as the villagers still trust me, I will continue to work, continue to contribute, and serve the people.”

The story of Village Chief Nguyen The Dung is the story of a simple man who lives with all his heart and works with all his heart. In him, there is no bright halo, only the warm light of trust, of loyalty and kindness. Doing good deeds does not need to be grand, just need to be sincere, persistent and for the people, then the people will naturally remember.

With his role and responsibility as village chief, Mr. Nguyen The Dung (middle) is always present wherever people need him.
