In recent times, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Dien Tho Commune, Dien Khanh District has implemented many practical and creative methods to encourage people to classify household waste at source. Thanks to active propaganda, the participation of village Front officials and local authorities, the model has received the support of the people and brought about clear results.
People actively responded
Recently, the image of pairs of old paint cans reused by people in Phuoc Luong village, Dien Tho commune to classify household waste has become familiar to every family. The paint cans are labeled with eye-catching words, helping to distinguish recyclable waste from non-biodegradable waste. This is the result of the model "Using waste to make household waste containers" launched by the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the commune since August 2023.

Mr. Pham Van Quang (Phuoc Luong village) said that in the past, his family used large sacks to collect all kinds of waste in one place in the garden. The waste filled up very quickly, sometimes giving off a foul smell because it was not yet the collection day. Since joining the model, he has used 2 old paint buckets with lids to sort the waste. Leftover food, vegetables, fruits, etc. are composted in the garden as fertilizer for plants. Recycled waste is kept separately for sale as scrap; hard-to-decompose waste is brought to the general collection point. Mr. Vo Duc Phuc (Phuoc Luong village) shared: “My family has been sorting waste for nearly 2 years now. Since sorting waste at home, the amount of waste sent to the collection point has decreased significantly. Every month, from recycled waste, I can sell scrap. This not only saves money but also contributes to protecting the environment, making the village cleaner and more beautiful.”
Since August 2023, Phuoc Luong village has been selected by the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Dien Tho commune as a pilot model of "Using waste to make household waste containers". The model has initially brought positive results and has been well received by the people. According to Mr. Vo Quoc Tra - Head of the Phuoc Luong Village Front Working Committee, right from the beginning of the implementation, the Front Working Committee has directly collected and purchased old paint cans and chemical cans, brought them back to soak and clean them, attached hinges to make lids and clearly labeled them. After that, the cans were distributed to households participating in the model. Thanks to the effective propaganda work, many households have come to ask to participate. Up to now, Phuoc Luong village alone has 90 households classifying waste at home according to this model.
From the pilot model in Phuoc Luong village, this initiative has spread to neighboring villages and communes. Up to now, the entire Dien Khanh district has had more than 300 households participating in the model. It is noteworthy that not only does it create a habit of proper waste disposal, the model also helps people utilize organic waste as fertilizer, reducing the amount of waste that needs to be disposed of at the landfill, contributing to reducing pressure on environmental sanitation.
Maintain multiple models
In addition to the above model, currently, in Dien Tho commune, there are 34 self-managed models of environmental protection and climate change response, building a bright - green - clean - beautiful environmental landscape. These are models jointly built by the Front and mass organizations, typically: "Self-managed residential areas for environmental protection", "Turning organic waste into valuable resources to increase farmers' income", "Self-managed roads bright - green - clean - beautiful", "Lighting up the countryside roads" ...
Mr. Phan Van Hung - Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Dien Khanh district: The model of "Using waste to make household waste containers" to classify and treat household waste of the Dien Tho Commune Front has contributed to raising awareness and sense of responsibility of cadres, members and people in environmental protection. This is also the basis for the Front at all levels in the district to effectively implement the campaign "All people unite to build new rural areas and civilized urban areas". The model not only helps people save on the cost of buying trash cans but also limits the large amount of old paint cans discharged into the environment, improving the effectiveness of propaganda and mobilizing people to effectively implement environmental protection.
