Military Hospital 175 (HCMC) has just coordinated with specialized units to successfully perform the first multi-organ and tissue retrieval from a brain-dead donor at the hospital.
The organ donor was Mr. NTT (born in 1975), diagnosed with brain death due to a massive hemorrhagic stroke, with severe cerebral edema. Faced with the above situation, Mr. NTT's family agreed to donate his organs to help other patients.
Ms. PTLP (born in 1979), the wife of the organ donor, shared: “If we can save someone else, so that a part of him can continue to live, that is the best thing. Now, knowing that there are people who have received liver and kidney transplants, and have a chance to live thanks to this sharing, we feel somewhat comforted.”
With professional support from the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center and frontline hospitals, the entire professional process – from brain death confirmation, consultation, completion of legal documents to organ retrieval – was implemented urgently, seriously and in accordance with legal regulations.
During the surgery that took place on the afternoon of April 7, the units mobilized nearly 100 doctors, nurses, and technicians to coordinate urgently and successfully retrieve many tissues and organs including: 2 kidneys, liver (divided into 2 lobes), heart, and 2 corneas. These organs were immediately transported to receiving hospitals for transplantation to seriously ill patients waiting for organ transplants, opening up new opportunities for them to live.
Military Hospital 175 alone has successfully performed two kidney transplants for the first time right at the hospital after taking kidney from a brain-dead donor. This is the first time the hospital has successfully performed a closed process, from receiving a brain-dead donor, determining brain death, taking the organ, and performing the transplant right on the spot.
By 2:00 a.m. on April 8, the heart transplant and two kidney and liver transplants had been successfully performed, bringing life and hope to 7 patients, including 1 pediatric patient.
