Is chewing ice good for you?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên02/06/2024

Occasionally chewing on ice cubes from cold drinks isn't a problem. This action can help provide much-needed hydration, especially on hot days.

However, frequently craving and chewing ice can be a sign of underlying health problems and potentially lead to complications related to oral health, mental health, and nutrition, according to the health website Verywell Health.

Chewing ice may not be dangerous to your body, but it can affect your oral health.

Why do many people have a craving for ice?

There are many reasons why people crave ice. One of these reasons is dehydration. Dehydration can lead to thirst, ice cravings, and dry mouth, tongue, and lips. Other signs of dehydration include headaches, fatigue, and darker urine.

Some studies suggest that craving ice may be a result of nutritional deficiencies. Research indicates that ice cravings could be a sign of zinc or calcium deficiency.

Some studies have also shown that some people with iron deficiency may experience a sudden craving for ice. This craving intensifies as the body's iron levels are nearing depletion.

Additionally, the craving to chew ice could be a sign of Pica syndrome, a disorder that leads to overeating of non-food items or non-nutritious substances. This craving may become more frequent during periods of stress.

Is chewing ice dangerous?

Chewing ice isn't necessarily dangerous, but it can cause some health problems.

Aside from providing hydration, ice has no nutritional value. This is why consuming large amounts of ice over a long period instead of other foods and drinks can lead to nutritional problems.

When iron deficiency and ice cravings occur simultaneously, the body may not be getting enough iron and other nutrients.

In addition, chewing ice regularly can lead to problems such as tooth damage, toothache, and increased sensitivity to cold. Over time, tiny, undetectable cracks can develop in the enamel, leading to larger cracks or chips later on. Chewing ice can also damage fillings, allowing bacteria to enter and potentially forming cavities beneath the filling.

For people with Pica syndrome, if the addiction to eating ice is left untreated, it can lead to malnutrition.
