Breeding innovation is the core factor helping the "flower capital" Da Lat maintain its brand and expand its export market.

Exploiting the advantages of combining imported varieties

For many years, Lam Dong has been known as the “flower capital” of the country, especially with the flower production center of Da Lat. Lam Dong has a temperate climate, fertile land and a long tradition of cultivation, Lam Dong flowers not only cover all regions in the country but also reach many international markets.

Currently, the whole province cultivates over 10,000 hectares of flowers of all kinds, mainly roses, gladiolus, carnations, gerberas, lisianthus, etc. The demand for seeds for annual production is about 2.5 - 2.8 billion seeds, tubers, plants, and shoots. Meanwhile, the local tissue culture system can only meet about 1 - 1.1 billion seedlings, plus about 1.2 - 1.4 billion asexually propagated seedlings (chrysanthemums, gladiolus, roses). In general, 97 - 98% of the seeds for production are supplied from within the province. However, about 1.6 - 2.9% of the seeds still need to be imported each year. These are mostly high-quality cut flower varieties such as: chrysanthemums, lilies, lilies, roses, gerberas, carnations, silver stars, tulips, lilies, salem... These varieties have outstanding advantages in color, branch durability, long-distance transport ability, suitable for domestic and foreign market needs, especially for export.

In the context of increasingly narrowing agricultural land area and complex climate change, having a source of new high-quality varieties plays a decisive role in the productivity, quality and competitiveness of Lam Dong flowers. New varieties not only bring high productivity, reduce pests and diseases, but also open up a trend of unique and diverse flower products to meet the needs of modern consumers.

Deeply involved in the global flower production chain

From 2021 to now, many businesses under the Dalat Flower Association have been granted plant quarantine licenses to import dozens of new flower varieties from major markets such as the Netherlands, the US, Japan, Israel, France, etc. Some varieties have affirmed their superiority, providing high productivity and quality, meeting market demand, and are gradually being put into mass production.

In the period 2023 - 2024, the Plant Protection Department has granted 28 licenses to 5 enterprises in the province, allowing the import of 44 flower varieties with more than 1.57 million units of seeds from 16 countries. Dalat Hasfarm is the largest importer with nearly 1.2 million units of seeds of 29 flower varieties. Test results in 2024 show that 18 varieties have been put into cultivation, of which 10 varieties show high productivity, few pests and diseases, and good market potential. This is the basis for continued import and expansion in the coming years.

Based on the achieved results, in 2025, the Plant Protection Department will continue to grant licenses to businesses to import 28 flower varieties with development prospects, in line with the orientation of improving the quality of Lam Dong flower products, meeting the strict standards of the export market.

Importing copyrighted flower varieties not only brings economic benefits, but also affirms Lam Dong's position on the world flower map. In the context of global competition, variety innovation is the core factor helping the "flower capital" Da Lat maintain its brand, expand its market share, and adapt to climate change and new consumer trends.

Mr. Phan Thanh Sang - Chairman of the Dalat Flower Association said that over the implementation period, the Flower Seed Import Project has proven to be clearly effective in helping the Lam Dong flower industry diversify its seed sources, not only serving the domestic market but also expanding exports. Many new flower varieties have outstanding productivity and quality, are favored by consumers, thereby enhancing the value and competitiveness of the local flower industry. More importantly, the seed import process is an opportunity for the Lam Dong flower industry to directly access advanced flower industries in the world, participating more deeply in the global flower production chain. Through that, the flower industry not only has new varieties, but also receives modern production processes, care technology, and disease prevention, suitable for local conditions.

In practice, imported flower varieties after screening have affirmed their quality, opened up a sustainable production direction, and at the same time attracted more businesses to participate. This is a necessary step for businesses to confidently expand production, increase integration and affirm the Dalat flower brand in the international market.
