Pursuant to Decision No. 2208/QD-UBND (dated August 3, 2023) of the Provincial People's Committee, the College of Economics - Technology and Fisheries, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, was assigned to preside over the provincial-level scientific task "Improving the technology of seed production and commercial farming of sea worms on a commercial scale in Quang Ninh". This is a topic of great practical significance, aiming to master the closed technological process, from seed production, rearing to commercial products, serving the development of large-scale commercial farming.

Up to now, at the research facility in Dong Mai ward, the group of experts has initially perfected the technology of producing sea worm seeds. Environmental factors, temperature, salinity, and food are strictly controlled to ensure a high survival rate and development like in the natural environment. From the research results, the school has formed a stable sea worm seed population, ready to serve the commercial farming model in ponds and on tidal flats in areas with suitable ecological conditions such as: Hai Ha, Dam Ha, Van Don and Tien Yen.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan, an officer of the College of Economics - Technology and Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Head of the task of seed production and commercial farming of Quang Ninh sea worms, said: "Currently, the unit can produce sea worms on a commercial scale. The unit can completely produce a large amount of sea worms from 400,000-500,000, up to a million each year...".
Being proactive in sourcing seeds is an important breakthrough, paving the way for the formation of commercial sandworm farming in Quang Ninh, reducing dependence on natural exploitation, and at the same time creating jobs for coastal workers.
Along with the efforts of scientists, many businesses in the province are also interested in, learning about and preparing conditions to cooperate in developing large-scale sandworm farming. Mr. Pham Quang Tung, Director of Thanh Tung Van Don Company Limited, shared: "Having technology to reproduce and commercially raise sandworms is a great advantage for Quang Ninh province to take the initiative in farming areas and raw materials for deep processing. This is an area that the Company is very interested in."

According to the plan, the task continues to complete 3 technical processes: Seed production, raising to level II seed and commercial farming of sea worms in ponds. The expected productivity targets are 3-4 tons/ha for pond farming and 600-800kg/ha for tidal farming, farming time is about 15 months, size 80-120 pieces/kg. When completed, the state management agency will organize the recognition of the technical process, and at the same time, deploy training courses for technicians and people to replicate the model.
Previously, during the implementation process, the task encountered many difficulties due to the impact of Typhoon Yagi in 2024, which caused damage to many ponds and breeds. However, thanks to the support of the province and the efforts of the research team, the technical indicators have now been restored and are ready for the evaluation and acceptance phase.
The completion of technology for seed production and commercial farming of sea worms not only opens up a new direction for Quang Ninh's marine economy, but is also consistent with the spirit of Resolution 57 of the Politburo on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation. By proactively using indigenous seed sources and combining the application of technical advances, Quang Ninh has another potential industry to develop in a modern and sustainable direction; at the same time, it contributes significantly to the conservation of aquatic resources and increases the income of coastal people.
