According to the South China Morning Post, Japanese Education Minister Toshiko Abe said the ministry is coordinating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to support international students whose studies at Harvard University have been interrupted due to the US ban.
“We are working with the US side to provide information on Harvard’s response, and at the same time, we are asking the government to consider support measures, such as accepting students into Japanese universities so they can continue their studies,” Ms. Abe said.
She also said it might be extended to students at other US universities if they face similar bans.
The move comes amid a legal standoff between Harvard and the Trump administration. In addition to banning international admissions, the US has also revoked $2.2 billion in federal funding from Harvard, prompting the university to file a lawsuit.
A federal court has temporarily blocked the ban, but more legal developments are expected.
In response to the Japanese Government's proposal, experts said this is an opportunity for Japan to attract high-quality human resources from abroad, enhancing the position of highereducation in Japan.
Mr. Robert Dujarric - co-director of the Institute of Contemporary Asian Studies at Temple University Tokyo campus - commented that this is a golden opportunity for Japanese universities.
“The people who qualify to study at Harvard are the top talents in the world. Those are the people that any country wants in its system to study, work, and live,” he said.
He also said that accepting more international students would demonstrate to the global education community that Japanese universities are capable of competing in the “big leagues,” while also demonstrating the absurdity of the US administration’s policies.
Academics also believe that the presence of students from Harvard will contribute to raising educational standards, creating a dynamic academic environment and bringing long-term benefits to Japanese society.
Some experts also expect many international students to stay, start businesses and contribute to Japan's socio-economic development after graduation.
The legal battle between Harvard and the US government is escalating. The Harvard Board of Trustees believes that the Trump administration is “retaliating” because Harvard refuses to accept the federal government’s illegal control over its curriculum, faculty and students.
In addition to Harvard, other top universities such as Columbia, Cornell and Pennsylvania are also being targeted in a pressure campaign from the US government, aimed at forcing schools to comply with the government's agenda.
