"We will continue to actively push for sanctions against Russia and support Ukraine. Japan remains firmly committed to the roadmap to resolve the territorial issue and conclude a peace treaty (with Russia)," Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on January 30.
A conference on Ukraine's reconstruction will be held in Tokyo at the end of February, Kishida added.
Russia and Japan have yet to sign a peace treaty ending World War II due to a territorial dispute over the Kuril Islands, which are controlled by Russia and claimed by Japan as the Northern Territories.
Relations between the two countries have deteriorated in recent years. Shortly after Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, Japan imposed sanctions on dozens of Russian individuals and organizations.
Moscow has repeatedly stated that Russia is ready to sign a peace treaty with Japan, but only if Tokyo no longer claims sovereignty over the Kuril Islands (Northern Territories).
Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev today once again affirmed that Moscow "does not oppose a peace treaty" but on the condition that Tokyo must give up its claim to sovereignty over the islands.
"Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida once again supports signing a peace treaty with Russia. This will certainly include discussion of the Kuril Islands and maintaining sanctions," Medvedev wrote on social media.
