At the end of 2018, Hanoi announced the completion of planting one million new trees. When newly planted, the trees are secured with iron or wooden shackles to prevent breakage or falling due to weather and to help the trees grow vertically.
By 2022, the press continuously reported that the shackles surrounding the tree trunks were not loosened or removed, causing the tree to deform and affecting its development and growth. After that, the authorities urgently intervened and loosened the shackles for the trees.
However, according to Dan Tri reporters, there are still many trees in Hanoi that have not had their shackles loosened.
Looking at the row of trees being "strangled" in lane 158 Vo Chi Cong, Mr. Lo Van Than (23 years old, from Dien Bien ) expressed his sorrow: "If these trees are not shackled soon, I don't know if they can survive, it hurts my heart to see them."

Than said that recently, the tree company has gone through a review and removed the shackles from a series of trees along both sides of Vo Chi Cong Street. The fact that the trees in the alley have not had their shackles removed may have been "forgotten".
According to Mr. Tran Minh Quang (31 years old, living in Van Phu Urban Area), trees that grow well and have a diameter of 25 - 30cm can have their shackles removed because the trees have a stable root system and are difficult to break or fall.
Mr. Quang hopes that the authorities will soon inspect and review all the trees in Hanoi to unshackle the trees that are being "strangled". The appearance of "strangled" trees on the sidewalks causes loss of urban beauty.

Faced with the above situation, Associate Professor Dr. Dang Van Ha, Director of the Institute of Landscape Architecture and Urban Trees (University of Forestry) said: Newly planted trees in the first 2-3 years must be supported and shackled to avoid mechanical collision and breakage because the root system has not yet developed.
After a period of planting, the shackles must be regularly checked and loosened to allow the tree to grow stably. If not loosened in time, the bark inside the shackles will die, leading to pests and diseases attacking and causing the tree to fall.

Mr. Ha said that trees that have been planted for 4-5 years should have their shackles removed because they have grown well. After that, these shackles can be used to support newly planted trees, which will reduce costs.
"Unshackle trees in Hanoi will take a long time because of the large number of trees," Mr. Ha commented, adding that the planting of urban trees in Hanoi still has many shortcomings and the selection of trees is not suitable.
For example, the row of newly dead trees had to be removed on the extended Huynh Thuc Khang street and the trees planted under Ring Road 3.

Regarding the information that many trees were "strangled" by iron shackles that affected their growth, a representative of Hanoi Green Parks and Trees Company Limited said: After the press reported, the company inspected, reviewed and loosened the shackles for trees in the entire management area.
Up to now, the unit has loosened the shackles for about 500 trees. With the upcoming storm season, Hanoi Green Parks Company Limited will continue to check for new trees to loosen the shackles in time.

It is expected that after the rainy season, the shackles will be removed for trees that have grown stably.
Regarding the trees that have not been loosened as reported by the reporter, such as in lane 158 Vo Chi Cong (Tay Ho district); Van Phu urban area (Ha Dong district), the representative of Hanoi Green Parks Company said that these areas may not have been handed over by the project owner. In the coming time, the unit will continue to check and loosen the shackles for the above trees.
Since 2016, in order to implement the urban greening campaign, Hanoi has planted more than 1 million trees on the median strips of roads. By the end of 2018, Hanoi announced the completion of planting 1 million new trees. Of which, 73,000 trees were planted under the socialized scheme.
